Thanks for the kind words lads, I appreciate them. zs180 wrote: Another magnificent R-class battleship! I cannot recall seeing any model of HMS Ramillies before. I couldn't decide between the 1917 First World War dazzle scheme and her final 1944 British Pacific Fleet style scheme so I ended up doing both.

A final coat of gloss varnish to the sea base this morning and that is that, I'm declaring her finished. Again please excuse the filthy camera sensor: Attachment:

Overall I'm pleased enough with her and her sea base. Plenty of mistakes made and lessons learned. Hopefully will make speedier progress with future builds.

Again, a busy year with work and what not last year saw practically no modelling done. Now it's time to finish things.. I have got the sea base done and she has just been mounted in it. Excuse the poor quality photo taken on my phone through the display case: Attachment:

Once I have had a good look at it and tidied up any gaps or irregularities with the waves that should be that hopefully.

Same as with my Royal Oak build, little progress in recent months as I generally don't do much modelling in spring or summertime. However now that it's winter it is time to get moving again. A start made on the sea base, again using the incomplete hull of what is to become H.M.S. Royal Sovereign to measure it up: Attachment:

Wake pattern added, next step will be to coat the whole thing in paper and artist's medium to achieve a smooth hopefully water-like surface.

Thanks Tomek. As mentioned before Revenge will be easier in terms of construction than Ramillies but much more difficult in terms of painting!

No progress as yet on the seascape as I have been working on H.M.S. Revenge in her 1918 fit instead. Here my punch and die set and rolling set become improvised weights to keep the wood deck sheet straight and level while the adhesive dries. Same as for Ramillies I used artists' medium after having sprayed matt acrylic varnish onto the sticky back of the wood deck sheet to 'kill' the factory applied adhesive. I prefer to use my own adhesive (artists' medium) as I can be assured of full coverage and also know that the artists' medium gives you some time for adjustments before setting and sticking the deck in place: Attachment:

Some more progress, the final round of progress on the ship in fact. I added the extra crew figures and the rubbish chutes forward on the hull sides. So that’s her fully completed and manned, unless I spot any additional minor paint touch-ups? She took quite a bit of work to complete, more than I anticipated. Primarily due to her extensive AA, radar and missile jammer fit. As well as the torpedo bulges. A close call between her and H.M.S. Royal Oak as to which was the more difficult build? Ramillies probably edges it due to the radar and missile jammer fit and having to research all of that. Attachment:

All her Oerlikons now have a crew of three each with more crew assigned to the PomPoms and the 4 inch battery also. All that remains now is to build a sea base and mount her in it. I’ll post more updates as I work on that. In other news work is already advancing on my next project, H.M.S. Revenge in her 1918 fit. Should be significantly less complicated than Ramillies: Attachment:

I decided to bite the bullet and add more crew figures. I have spent so long on Ramillies already that the additional time required to paint and fit the extra figures is very small in the overall scheme of things. I'll add some to Ramillies and some to Royal Oak which also needs crew figures added. The figures are another set of Tom's Modelworks 1/500 figures as before. Painting in progress: Attachment:

i'll hopefully start work on the sea base shortly.

I appreciate all the kind words lads, many thanks to everyone who commented. Glad people are enjoying watching the build progress. Some more progress today. I have added a set of crew figures, Tom's Modelworks 1/500 Scale Crew Figures. I placed them manning the anti-aircraft weapons and the 4 inch dual purpose guns for the most part. The Oerlikons and PomPoms are probably somewhat under-manned in reality, but oh well. Not sure I'm bothered adding another whole crew set to her! I'll have to think about it. I also added the flota nets formed from string as mentioned above. These are attached to the splinter shields. Attachment:
DSC_0674.JPG [ 399.98 KiB | Viewed 1227 times ]
As mentioned at the outset my intention is to depict her as seen during Operation Dragoon, the Allied invasion of Southern France in 1944.

An amusing little aside, it seems sailors aboard the real H.M.S. Ramillies enjoyed a spot of model making back in 1936: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yX11yRDr24EAll in all a fascinating little snippet of the past.
