Topic review - HMS Erebus (1/700) 175 years Franklin's Expedition

Thank you Jim!

Rigging a sailing ship in 1/700 is not my favourite task. I like to have such models, but to built one or two per year is enough. Bretagne has a much more complex rigging - and I am sure you will also aim for a much more detailed representation of her rigging.

Polar expeditions are a very interesting topic and there are still many ships to be built. Next year, I thought e.g. about Discovery (I) and Gauss.

well done Lars; tiny sailing ships...
I will be making an expedition into 1/700 square rigg soon also ( Bretgane 1860 )

both exciting and frightening!

Your interest in polar serves me well too! -
these lesser well known expeditions
are worthy of learning more about;

I am now reading up further!

Very Good

Thank you and thank you for the map!

Fox would be also an interesting model. I have not yet found enough plans of her.

Quite exceptional work on the Erebus! One simply cant imagine how difficult it is to rig a sailing ship this small. :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:
I myself have also been long obessed with every thing related to the Franklin Expedition. I've made several maps to all by pure interest, below is one of them. That Kainan Maru in one of the pics kinda reminds me of the Fox though. She had once captained by McClintock and sailed into Polar region in an effort locate the whereabouts of Franklin's crew.

A few, no, many years ago, I used to sing in the numerous folk clubs in and around Nottingham with a couple of mates, we were called the Firkins, named after a 9 gallon beer barrel.

One of the songs on our repertoire was 'Lady Franklyn's lament'

Here is a link to the Pentangle version, very haunting tune and nostalgic lyrics, hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed looking at the excellent models and diaorama.

Twas homeward bound one night on the deep
Swinging in my hammock I fell asleep
I dreamed a dream and I thought it true
Concerning Franklin and his gallant crew

With a hundred seamen he sailed away
To the frozen ocean in the month of May
To seek a passage around the pole
Where we poor seamen do sometimes go

Through cruel hardships they mainly strove
Their ship on mountains of ice was drove
Only the Eskimo with his skin canoe
Was the only one that ever came through

In Baffin Bay where the whale fishes blow
The fate of Franklin no man may know
The fate of Franklin no tongue can tell
Lord Franklin along with his sailors do dwell

And now my burden it gives me pain
For my long lost Franklin I'd cross the main
Ten thousand pounds I would freely give
To say on earth that my Franklin do live

Cheers, Jabb

Thank you, Rob!

The 1/700 scale has the advantage that they can be compared with the other ships.

E.g. here with two more modern polar research ships, Georgi Sedow (1967; built from Don's parts) and L'Astrolabe (2017; 3D printed, Masters of Military).

Today 175 years ago, on 26th of July 1845, the two ships of Franklin, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, were last seen by Europeans. John Franklin sailed with the two ships to find the Northwest Passage, but was lost. In the following decades a large number of expeditions were searching for the Franklin's men and managed to find their remains based on evidence from the Inuit. On one of these expeditions, the crew of HMS Investigator (Robert McClure) first walked through the Northwest Passage. The wrecks of the two ships were found only in the last decade, in 2014 (Erebus) and 2016 (Terror).

HMS Erebus was built in 1823-26 as Fury class bomb vessel. This type was considered to be very useful as polar research vessel. Erebus was converted in 1839 for the 1839-1843 Antarctic expedition of James Clark Ross.

The model is scratch built in 1/700. Very motivating was Michael Palin's book Erebus. The Story of a Ship. The model is based on plans of the NMM.
