I have vol 1 to 49 in the quarterly editions of warship in v good condition and the three subsequent annuals including the last quarterly 49 willing to sell

I'm now annoyed as I made the conscious decision about 5 years ago to buy the whole series of Warship.

It is simply the best technical series on warships in my opinion, its well presented, has a good range of all Navies stuff, I find a lot of stuff out their is far too USN centric sometimes, thats why I like series.

I have every H/B from from the 1977 Volume 1 to the latest 2006 volume. Next time I see John Jordan I'll tell him No.49 isn't in the H/B series and he might be able to twist Conway/Chatham's arm to do a special reprint somehow.

I can imagine! I once looked to fill a few holes in my Warship collection. Book search returned a couple years at around $270 US each. I mean, that is out of this world! Some issues seem very rare and others sell for $25 US. Back in the 80s when I visited the U.K. most every summer, I picked up my Warship issues at Foyles in the quarterly form. But then the USNI Press did a big reprint on all the old issues, so started buying them instead. But I do have 1982,1987,1988 only in the quarterly. I admit I like the articles all together rather than that "To be continued" stuff in the quarterly. Too bad I let that No49 get lost, but I now think I know what happened. When I was informed that the quarterly issues were out with no.49 and that yearly issues were coming in with that year, I must have tossed No. 49 expecting to get all those articles in the 1989
issue :censored_2:. My mistake, and I was most intersted in that Range Finder Article. The lesson could be "Never throw anything out, it may become valuable"!

Thanks for clearing up my question about the Warship journals. I remember getting that no.49 issue in a green softcover and then never getting another, until much later I was notified about the shift to yearly only. I remember this article about the rangefinders and range transmitters very well. Lord knows where that issue got to, I could never find it again. My reason for this interest was the article explaining the great advantage the Japanese had by having the rangefinders in good numbers and also an electro-mechanical range transmission system to the guns. Now,Pakenham's first hand dispatches blow this idea out of the water, at least as it pertains to the Aug. 10th action, I am just now starting his reports on Tsushima. So we shall see what he has to say on that battle. What I mean by 'blown out of the water', is that the Japanese did indeed have all this equipment, but on Aug. 10th it proved of little advantage. Have you read the book version of Royal Navy Attache Reports on the Russo-Japanese War? It was reprinted by "The Battery Press" here in the USA in 2003 in a 400 copy run.

It seems then according to the above you need to have the p/b issue no. 49 as the hardbacks missed it, damn I don't have a complete set then, what a cock-up!!! thanks Conway!!!! :mad_1: :censored_2: :mad_1:

When they (Conway) changed to the annual version they kind of cocked it up as before 1989 they released 2 volumes in H/B as Volume 11 & 12 without dustcovers and they kind of look out of place in my set, they are also the rarest 2 volumes to get.

Bob I have the complete run of this series from 1977 until now 2006 in H/B I'll see if I can find what your after.

BTW at one of the naval conferences I attended earlier this year there was a retired RN Rear-Admiral of the name Roger Morris, C.B. there who lectured on these 2 Navies and the Battle of Tsushima. I think he's an expert on this battle and all that went on in the Russian & Japanese fleets at this time, perhaps he has published on it though I'm not sure.

I've been doing some research on the naval Battle of Aug. 10th 1904 between the Russian Port Arthur Squadron and the Japaense Battle Fleet. While reading "The Russo-Japanese War 1904-1905, British Naval Attache Reports" I came across some startling reports of Japanese gunnery, use of range finders, range transmitters and fall of shot practices,by Captain Pakenham. Alot of these seem to contradict the general conclusions of an article in the quarterly journal Warship. I had a copy of this journal at one time, but it got lost over the years. Here is where the story gets complicated. I was getting the quarterly issues in soft cover, and after 1988, I got one more issue in a green cover that year. It must have been No. 49 I989, but I never got another issue as they stopped the quarterly program and went to a yearly issue. 1989 I have, but it does not have the material printed in the one and only quarterly issue, and that issue contained the article on Japanese use of Range Finders, range transmitters etc. Am I wrong about what happened with the journal in 1989?? I would like to know if any helpful member has this issue, the last one printed as a quarterly and if so, could they find a way for me to get a copy of that article? Via pdf or even print?? Would be a great help to me if someone could. :wave_1:
