Back in July, I ordered some GMM 1:700 scale sets that had been unavailable for a long time - USN WWII Battleships, Modernized New Jersey/Iowa, and Nimitz-class. All three types were clearly new-production, but while the first two were perfectly matched in detail to the old ones (although Squadron has switched to using brass for the 1:700 sets whereas the old GMM used stainless steel - the 1:350 sets were always brass), the Nimitz sets (yes, I ordered multiples of it) had the same kind of missing detail that Martin observed on the Fletcher set, only more noticeable - for example, all the deck edge netting pieces were just open frames. I contacted Squadron about it and the Nimitz set was pulled from sale pending a new production run (and eventual replacement of the ones I ordered).

Now that Martin has found the error on the Fletcher set, it seems possible that there may be others. Be sure to check any new GMM sets that you have purchased in the last 4 months or so to verify whether they look like they ought to, and let Brandon of Squadron know if you got a bad one. It wasn't his intention to downgrade the product.

An in-box review of the 1/350 Gold Medal Model World War II Fletcher Class PE has been posted.

Regarding my observation that the set was somewhat different from the original, I chatted with Brandon Lowe of Squadron, who said "We have recalled them �- the missing etched names and the rest of the missing relief etch is a factory screw up. That entire production run is no good and we are working on replacing them. The new set is �supposed to be� identical to the original set."
