Through the gunhouse roof hatch, surely?

I have been asked on another forum about the way the crew could access the UP platform on the top of main turret #2 from 1940.
Pictures show kind of ladder between the two guns on the turret, but nothing on the (high) barbette below.
The recent Takom 1:72 Hood turret kit includes that ladder but nothing below on the barbette.

Can you help me?

Has anyone settled on the correct color for the top mainmast of the HMS Hood? While grey seems common, the last photos suggest it might actually be white. What do you all think?

I wanted to follow up on my previous post now that I�ve actually had my hands on one of these new kits. As expected, it�s essentially the same as the 1941 with some different 3-D parts and of course different photoetch (especially in the case of the deluxe). Based on what I see, you could build either 1940 or 1941 with the basic plastic elements of this kit. If going for extreme detail, you�d need the specific photo etch sets though.

In some ways, this kit is an improvement over the previous one. This is because they fixed some errors/omissions we had overlooked the first time �round. These include the addition of some missing bulwarks on the conning tower platform and a large support brace under the roof of the rear superstructure. Sure, modellers could easily add these, bult it�s nice to have them included in the new kit. Naturally, being 1940, this kit also features steam pinnaces, but it also appears to have extra 35ft fast motor boats. So if you choose to build the ship at the time of sinking, you can now have the proper combination of boats (as everyone knows, it�s been photographically ascertained by EJ Foeth that Hood only had TWO 35ft fast motor boats and still retained her starboard pinnace at the time of her loss).

Honestly, it retains all the key 1941 parts with the exception of the aerial warning radar (being summer1940 it has a direction finder instead�though the gunnery radar is still included). One could easily build 1940 or 1941 if they could build or source that radar. It�s THAT close.

There are indeed a couple of errors in this kit (the admirals bridge deck and Carley Float positions, which you can read about in our review), but they are minor and are very easily fixed with minimal work. So, another excellent job done by Flyhawk!

I�m hoping they consider Spanish Civil War an/or Empire Cruise versions of Hood. We�re ready to help and have already compiled the applicable information!

Dear All

Building the Trumpeter 1/350 Hood and adding extra scratch build detail on the underside of the shelter deck (Inspired by the work of E J Foeth). Whilst doing this it occurred to me that I have no idea whether the deck head would have been hull coloured or some alternative colour?

We are happy to assist and have indeed already compiled data for those particular timeframes (in other words, we�re ready to go)!

Yeah, 1940 is a head scratcher.

Spanish Civil war in light grey with stripes on turrets, or Empire Cruiser in earlier fit would both make me want to actually buy it over 1941 version. Here is to hoping an opportunity comes for you guys to have input.

According to google from a number of sources the answer to my question is indeed 'white'.

Hi guys

Hope you are all well, over the last few weeks I have been back on my build of Hood. Not sure if this has been looked before but the top mainmast, do we have a decission on colour. I had thought it to be grey, in some images it is but when looking at one of the last pictures taken before her sinking, I'm not so sure. When looking at the ariel photo taken May 22 the top mast, flag arm etc all look a very distinctive 'white'.

What do you guys think, EJ (good to see you still here) what do you think sir?

I apologize if this has already been addressed somewhere in the preceding 59 pages of this thread, but that's an awful lot of material to try to skim through in search of one particular piece of information.

I'm about to get started on the old Airfix 1/600 Hood, and it looks to me like the period for which that kit is least wrong is circa 1932, after the aircraft-handling arrangements were removed, but before light AA weapons started to proliferate. What does that mean in terms of color scheme? My impression is that the Battlecruiser Squadron in those days was an element of the Home Fleet (which would imply overall 507B), but that unit also seems to have spent a lot of its time in the early 30's on cruises to the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas. Would the ships have repainted into 507C for a voyage like that, just to make things less miserable for the crews? Or was there yet a third scheme for Home Fleet ships taking their acts on the road, as it were? I've seen several early-30's Hood photos in which it looks like she might be wearing a two-tone scheme, something like the 507B hull/507C upperworks paintjob for destroyers on the South Atlantic station, but that could easily be just an illusion created by the pronounced flare of the hull from the torpedo bulges up to the forecastle deck.

Just a note to let everyone know that we�ve just posted a full review of the Takom 1/72 Hood �B� turret to the Hood Association website. We also included some improvement suggestions that we hope folks will find useful!
