small windows on boat cabins

by Steve » Fri Mar 23, 2007 3:50 pm

I use a very sharp hard black pencil on 1/700 boats - paint the cabin superstructure in the desired colour then I scribe the windows in their desired locations using upward strokes only and finally finish off by repainting very carefully the top line of the windows. As an added bonus the pencil leaves a slight sheen which I think looks a bit like glass in 1/700 anyway!

How about a very fine point black ink pen...

or you could do as I do on small boat windows...

Use matt black paint.

paint a horizontal sweep with the brush as near as you can to the intended size...

then using a sharp knife tip scrape the edges area to square...

works for me in 1/700 scale

You might also consider just using some small squares of black decal.

Try a coat of clear over the tape first, let that dry, then paint the black. The clear will seep under the edges and seal them. After you paint the black, just dullcoat the entire boat to hide what clear seeped in.

Why not try painting the area of the windows black and then mask the windows and paint around them, instead of masking the area around the windows?

Hi
I`m trying to paint the small boats on Tamiyas 1/350 kgv, the 45" fast motorboats have windows that arnt shown on the moldings. I`ve tried tamiyas masking tape cut into slithers but the paint even when apllied sparingly runs under the tape, these windows are only about 1mm square so any run ruins it. am i mising something or have i got to try and be more carefull ?? Oh yeh i`ve tried thicker paint that wont run , no luck (doh)
