Yesterday night, I finished reading the book. It was an amazing journey from the beginning to the end, I enjoyed every single bit of it. Even though, Hara was a superb and experienced commander, I think he was a real lucky guy to have survived the war. This one and The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors are two of my favorite books so far.

I bought the book about a month ago. First of all, I got to say this is a must-have for any IJN fan. Yesterday, I got to page 174, just a little bit after Hara was in one of the night battles at Guadalcanal. Its amazing how he survived this night battle and only lost 43 crewmen. I think (my opinion) this is a great book, I do agree with GONE ASIATIC it has some spelling errors but nothing big. You wont be disappointed if you choose to buy it, that I promise you .

I*'m about 80% done reading IJN Destroyer Captain. What an excellent book, I'm not a big reader but this book has myself glued to it. :heh: I picked up a hardbound copy of I-Boat Captain extremely cheap ($5.43 that includes shipping) from Amazon and will be next on my reading list. :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Probably the best IJN destroyer account we can find out there...even more for who wrote it.

An excellent read and must have for IJN buffs and/or WWII history buffs.

A few minor errors I found, but none so significant.

I've been waiting for this to be republished for years, definately one of the seminal works on the IJN destroyer perspective given in english.

Here's the new cover:-

Well at last the USNI Press has come out with a hard cover reprint of Hara's memior "Japanese Destroyer Captain". Available from USNI Press in April. I'll get a copy just to replace my worn old paperback copy from the late 1960s. Somehow that book made it from my destroyer's ships library into my seabag when I transferred to a new DD. Now how did that happen :cool_1: ! No fear, I left them half a dozen of my no longer wanted books.
Seriously though, there are few books that tell first hand the story of IJN at war. This book is first rate. A must have for Pacific War fans.
