I've just learned that the city of Vlissingen has a online library of photographs dating from the Beginning (of photography) to the present. Since Vlissingen is the location of the Schelde shipyard, this collection includes dozens (if not hundreds) of photographs of Dutch (naval) vessels. But, finding it can be tricky with a dynamic URL.
1, go to
http://www.vlissingen.nl
2. Click on 'Kunst en Cultuur' in the second row of options.
3. Click on 'Gemeentearchief' on the lefthand side.
4. Click on 'Vlissingen in Beeld' on the lefthand side.
5. Now click on 'Bezoek de fotocollectie 'Vlissingen in Beeld'.
Now, under 'Rubriek' you find a cascade of filtering options. To find all images related to the Schelde shipyard, for instance, make the following selection: 1. Vlissingen, 2. Bedrijven, 3. Niet-gemeentebedrijven, 4. Schelde, 5. Scheepsbouw. Now, click 'zoeken' down below. 1000 images!
For another cross-section of ships, try 1. Vlissingen 2. Verdediging en bescherming 3. Verdediging 4. Zeemacht. Another 420 images!
It's a bit of a puzzle, but well worth the effort.
As far as I can see, you can't order prints of the images from abroad, but I can always help with that.
