Of course, as I alluded above, 'converting' means casting the extra turrets, getting extra .25 cal guns (I'd recommend replacing ALL the guns that came with the kit with GPM metal barrels - including the .25 cals) - you also have to be able to make - using Evergreen or Plastistruct plastic strips, flat pieces, etc. the 'guards' around each .25 cal nest, as well as building the double nest erected over the stern.
You also should re-sculpt the front half of the fire-control station on top of the superstructure into a semi-circle using putty, and open up the hole in the rear deck - it was NOT an elevator, but a permanent hole in the deck from where the big crane pulled the planes out of prior to their being catapulted into the air.
Finally I'd recommend getting both of the GMM photo-etch sets. Sure, between the photo-etch sets and all new GPM metal barrels you'll be out another $300 or so, but if you want to do it right there is no substitute. The mould-making rubber and resin for casting the extra turrets will add another $40 or so to the total.
Basically you'd better be sure of your ability to build things up from scratch before you get serious tackling this type of re-sculpting job. If you've never customized any model kits I'd HIGHLY recommend working on a few smaller cheaper models just til you get the 'hang of it'.....
Sound like a lot of work? You betcha. The longest project I've embarked on, I've put at least an average of 3-4 hours a DAY into it since May 1, and won't be done before year's end at the earliest....life interferes so you go through stretches when you can't find time to work on it....so it all depends on whether you're a singleminded batchelor or if you have responsibilities to a lot of other folks as to how fast it goes.....
