Yes, could be a bit dodgy. However, I've seen a similar method used for making ships' boats - a wooden former, covered with card or styrene strips, that's later removed. This seems to work OK.

Not for me if it is, I can just see all my planks falling to a heap on the worktop as the wax melts!

Sounds like it might be like "lost wax" casting. Maybe you have a solid wax (or similar) plug made up, which you then cover with the planking, then melt or break up the plug to leave a planked shell?
