Thoughts of the Sydney bring me back to a visit to Australia back in 1986, we went to the war memorial in Melbourne and on the inside were many lists of the Australian war dead. Under the large name HMAS Sydney one could read off all those names and think about what it means to lose an entire warship's crew. Also makes you think what a famous name HMAS Sydney is. What with the actions in both world wars. Quite moving experience. Alot like the Royal Navy Memorial in Plymouth I saw. So many names, so many ships>
It will be nice if we can finally learn what her hull damage looks like. Also wonder if she is in one piece or broke up going down?

Doing a google search on this earlier one site mentioned briefly that the Australian's will dispatch some form of survey vessel to the area to do a more thorough investigation.
Once the site can be confirmed without doubt; its extent mapped; and all the GPS co-ordinates sorted; only then can they sanction it an official war grave.
Am I right in suggesting Kormoran has not been located yet?
Could revealing Syndey's wreck also help locate her I wonder?
Another site mentioned they are very worried now about treasure hunters and need to get some protection sorted quickly.

That's big news! I expect that since the wreck is a war grave that nothing can be done down there without Australian Government approval?
In any case, with modern technology, the wreck can be examined in close detail and we shall know for sure what was the cause of the sinking with little or no trace.
My guess is that fire reached a magazine and she went down in a minute.
If the Germans are to believed, she was on fire and powerless when last seen.
