At Wikipedia, for the USN, they Do have a trio of lists on their index of USN Warships. They have designation number and name sorting lists, and additionally they have a list by class. I found it rather useful when creating the list of warships names, post-pearl that would not have been claimed, when trying to find a name for my planned Tillman build.

However, that only gives me current USN ships. I'd like to have the information back to WWII.

That you are not going to get on the web. The NVR for earlier time periods is avalible in hard copy only. There is no equivelent of the NVR for the Coast Guard, Army water craft, or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

I don't recall seeing anything like this. Funny enough I've created something similar for Canadian Navy ships.

Thanks for the replies so far. To clarify my original post, I'm looking for an electronic list, either a website or a database/spreadsheet/text file. In this list I'd like to have:

Hull #
Name
Class Name

and optionally
Building yard
dates
disposition

So far the best I've found is on the NVR at http://www.nvr.navy.mil/quick/INDEX.HTM and http://www.nvr.navy.mil/class.htm. I've got the active and inactive ship lists and the many class lists in Access, and they cross-reference pretty well. However, that only gives me current USN ships. I'd like to have the information back to WWII.

I'm surprised there's no Wikipedia entry with such a master list, but maybe I just haven't found it yet.

Peter

I think he was looking for them broken down by class, not a listing by hull number and name.

The appendix in Morrison does this, as would Paul Silverstone's bookU.S. Warships of WW.II (BANTAM DOUBLEDAY 1982), if you can find it.

Peter, a list by class can be found in the appendix to Morrison's History of US Naval Operations in WW.II, vol. XV.

You ought to be able to photocopy it at the library.

I'm looking for a table that shows the name, hull designation/number and class of USN ships. Since I'm new to ship modeling, I don't have a good handle on what ships are from what class. Additional fields for builder and dates would be helpful too, but I'm mainly after a name/number/class cross reference. I've got that sort of table for submarines, but not surface ships.

There are many sites that have lists of names and numbers, but I haven't found one that includes class without drilling down to the individual ship's entry.

Thanks!

Peter
