I can't find my copy of Warship Supplement to hand, but from memory the reference the author gave was some sort of official US Navy Publication.
To which archives have you been checking?

Following on from my earlier post I would be grateful for any information to be copied to my e-mail address - carnock<at>davemallinson<dot>fsnet<dot>co<dot>uk

Having just read the link listing some of the BPF Pennant numbers can I please ask if anyone has any information as to the original source document.

Various suggestions have been made including the US Navy Publication DNC 4A (Visual Call Sign Book) corrcted by various NRRP's up to 1946, also BR619, although the 1944 edition contains no information on this subject, and varous type of Admiralty Fleet order (including S-Series) and Commonwealth Navy Orders. To date I have been unable to find any relevant archived documents or publications however an official list must exist somewhere. the photographic record is too fragmented for the current list to have been developed from that source and it is a subject which the US Navy Historical Branch and neither the Royal Navy Museum or Naval Historical Branch have any details.

So the question is what was the original sourse of the information that provided the details published in Warship Journal No. 107 and in the earlier link posted by Laurence Batchelor on this forum?

Any help or suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

The cruisers' numbers were those of USN ships either scrapped (1-3), lost in combat, not completed as cruisers (the ones which became Independence class CVLs) or numbers unlikely to be used in wartime (161 and upwards). The destroyers' numbers were low enough not to duplicate USN destroyers (except WARD (DD66) - there was no D66 in the Commonwealth/Allied numbering scheme). Colossus class ships again had numbers higher than the USN was likely to reach, and RN battleships (plus RENOWN and RICHELIEU) were lower than any surviving USN BB hull numbers. CVEs' pennant numbers, in the 300 series, were higher than equivalent USN ships.

I just noticed an interesting pattern on the Fleet Carrier numberings. All of the pendant numbers are those of the USN carriers previously lost in the war. 1, Langley/Formidable, 2 Lexington/Illustrious, 5 Yorktown/Implacable, 7 Wasp/Indefatigable, 8 Hornet/Indomitable and 23 Princeton/Victorious.

I promised that I would post this as questions were forthcoming on the SteelNavy forums.
As these forums have more longevity I will post the complete pendant allocations in the hope their useful to modeller who wish to build ships of this Fleet.

Oh the days when we could put together such fleets of this size!
