What was the idea behind dropping nuclear ground mines there? What would have been the strength of those weapons, and did the Russian do this kind of thing more often in NATO waters?

The 1970 date ties to the K-8, which laid up to 20 nuclear ground mines in the Bay of Naples on 10 January.

She suffered a reactor fire and sank in the Bay of Biscay on her return on 8 April.

The story of a sunk sub and salvage may be cover of a NATO operation to recover the ground mines.

I have a recent (1990s) USN document with the lat/long of all lost Soviet/Russian nuclear subs, but I can't find it.

I read this book "Osipenko, L., Zhiltsov, L., and Mormul, N., Atomnaya Podvodnaya Epopeya, 1994." In map of soviet submarine incidents is mentioned loss of one of the submarines in Mediterranean, near Naples, in the year 1970. The submarine was equipped with nuclear warhead tipped torpedoes.
Is this true or disinterpretation?? Many sources on net speaks only about troubles with nuclear-powered wessels.., and this was probably an diesel submarine incident.
