Re: USS Weehawken Completed

Thanks for the compliments guys.

Tony, yes, you will be able to see her sometime later this year, say, August or so.

Chuck, I'm not exactly sure what my next big project will be, but I'd like it to be some sort of ironclad. Right now I'm knocking together Verlinden's CSS Atlanta (a beautifully cast little kit) and I have an old Lone Star USS Cairo that I'm going to use as a reference for a 1/192nd scale scratch-build. I really want to do a 1/96th scale City Class or Essex gunboat. Since I'm cutting plastic for a 1/192nd City class, I might just cut it in 1/96th at the same time. I definitely want to do a Canonicus class monitor someday, though, I love their asymmetrical stack and turret placement.

Devin,

I wanted to congratulate you here on your excellent build! :thumbs_up_1:

Am looking forward to seeing Weehawken on the gallery once you've got your photos sorted out.

I've got to ask now with the larger rivet plate skins available, what will be your next project? :cool_2:

Chuck

Hi Guys,
Devin,
Nice job!
Dedication to a particular subject unparalleled!!!
I hope to see this bad boy in person.
Keep up the excellent work!
Ironclads have a mysterious element that does indeed fascinate.
I think the interest in this subject type is ever increasing.
Tony

I didn't know that ironclads look impressive when built into models.

Weehawken is finally completely finished. I had trouble getting replacement bulbs for my photo lighting setup and just got around to taking these shots yesterday. More photos are on my website. I need to do a full write-up of the build process, but I've taken over 350 photos during the past year and a half of this project, so it'll take some time before I get that completed and sent in to Tim.

Thanks, guys. After I finish a few small additions (more crew, tow line, boat lines, etc.) then I'll take copious photos to send in for a feature.

Just two quick photos before I run out the door this morning. She's basically "done", but I will add more figures and some more lines on deck this coming week before MosquitoCon next Saturday. Even though I made a few flubs I learned a LOT building this kit and really enjoyed it. Once I finish the rest of the lines on deck and get a new bulb for my photography lighting I'll post more detailed photos.

Oh yeah, and I still have to make a flag for her. The one I have just didn't cut it.

Figures from Cottage Industry models. The tallest of the upright figures are right at 20mm tall. The bottom photo shows who will be the ship's sentry; I modified his hand position so he can hold the rifle, added an ammo clip box and belt to his waist, and I scratch built the rifle, using plastic for the stock and barrel, and 1/350th scale 20mm photo etch to fabricate a strike plate and hammer. The rifle is admittedly over-scale, but I just don't want to work with anything smaller than that!

Finished up the turret tonight -- well, the inside at least -- and now the guns are in their permanent home.
