Now it is, that I understand more clearly the world of Essex Class Carriers. I spent the better part of yesterday detailing the island of my "Randolph". I had to "undo" all that work because the picture I was working from, was another "Essex", whose island was completely different. I should have remembered that each shipyard overhaul, added or removed something that "currently" was needed, or was not required for the vessel's mission.
The earlier versions have far more similarities than the Viet Nam era versions, and are, therefore easier to model.
I can also see differences in Randolph over the short period from 1959-1966, so I have to choose those photos that show the details that existed between 1963-1965.
Adding the AN/SQS-23 bow mounted sonar dome was"fun", which means that now, the stem hawsepipe, and bow anchor also have to be added.
