not sure on autocrud but once in solidworks you can easily adjust everything with the change option which allows you to change the standard orientation your model comes in at to match what you want in solidworks.

so the bringing in of other parts shouldnt be any big problem.

I'm curious about the plane rotation problem when importing AutoCRUD files into SolidWorks. I abandoned AutoCRUD 20 years ago, so I don't know how it works now, and I haven't used SolidWorks.

In the program I use (DesignCAD) we have an option to set a default axis combination (XY, XZ, YZ) as the up/down and left/right plane for the side/front view. Can you do this in SolidWorks? If so, can you select a default plane that causes AutoCRUD files to import correctly?

how do you guys get the weird shapes in the sterns to loft up in solidworks? I been lofting plane fuselages for years but have yet to be able to get a good ships hull. I am trying to do the bismark and cant get it for nothing

I need a dose of ambition to either reinstall 2006 or learn to navigate 2008.

Don't feel bad, some clowns at AutoDesk felt that redesigning all the icons in AutoCAD 2009 was a good idea. Never mind that we have been used to the old ones and now have to stop and hunt for the right icon.

I just got the 2008 version and HATE IT! They change the way some of the tool bars are laid out and it just gives me a Fisher Price kind of feeling. At least 2006 doesn't look and feel like a clown designed it. Excuse me.......I have to go PUKE now.

Well just maybe Solidworks should adjust their interface to properly import AutoCAD files. AutoCAD is king of the CADD world anyway. :cool_2:

That's because AutoCAD's front view imports to SolidWorks top view. You have to rotate the entire AutoCad model backwards 90 degrees to have it import properly.

The problem is that these are drawings that I am importing from AutoCAD. They come in with the part laying on it's side.

I miss my object snaps and easy editing commands. However a part constructed in the beginning as a solidworks file has other advantages that you can't get in ACAD.

But just today I received my copy of AutoCAD 2008 Mechanical, so I will be busy checking out the new features.

When you begin to draw...
Choose the good plan -yz - for the sketch
the extrusion is - x - direction.
That what I made.

So,if you edit the extrusion, you could reverse it
When I made the Panzerschiff rangefinder, I made a square for the base in -yz- and made the extrusion in -x-

It is certainly possible to change the axis but, I don't know how to made

It is very important when you assemble the ship on the hull that all pieces must be with the good representation axis


When I design my Panzerschiff 10.5m rangefinder, their arms are not vertical :lol_pound: :lol_pound: :lol_pound:

OK, against my better judgment, I have agreed to give Solidworks a fair shake. Yes, it has some cool features, but one thing is driving me freaking nuts. Why is my Z-axis pointing down on all my models? When I click the top view, my model capsizes and I have to use the bottom view button to flip it back. I can't find any help online, my tech people tell me that's just the way it is and I can customize it. Well then how do I do that globally so all my drawings will display in the normal CAD mode? :mad_1:
