Re: Deutschland/Lutzow new book

My copy arrived today, and generally I have to agree with Foeth's criticism, although I do think it's a useful addition to my library.

What did really struck me as odd was that apart from "Lutzow", other German terms are spelled wrong: "Mowe" instead of "Mwe", "Rosselsprung" instead of "Rsselsprung", "Waltzertraum" instead of "Walzertraum", "Konigsberg" instead of "Knigsberg" were some I noted. Strangely, "Blcher" is spelt correctly with Umlaut. Also, Deutschland/Ltzow is always called "Panzerschiffe" (Plural) whereas it should be "Panzerschiff". This is the kind of confusion one regularly finds in modelling magazines, but to see it appear in a book is a little bit odd.

Also, finding "first Chancellor Hitler" present when Deutschland was launched, when Hitler only became Reichskanzler in 1933 as well as Deutschland being called the "first high seas unit" of Weimar navy is slightly unsettling with regard to the depth of research behind the book.

In all, as I said I still find the book has its uses, as the colour profiles are very attractive. If this is meant to be the beginning of a new series of booklets on major Kriegsmarine units, however, concentrating more on them and including more technical information may be a good idea. Particularly the design history of the ships is something that would probably deserve more attention in the anglophone world than it currently gets, and there is a lot of material out there, even in published form.

I received the book and flipped through it. Unfortunately, I'm not so positive and for several reasons

1) The general history is very brief and extremely descriptive, more like a tabular-record-of-movement. Sentences such as "while the RN lost the destroyer Achates and the minesweeper Bramble and endured heavy damages to the other heroic destroyers" indicate that no editor has seriously looked at the text . Did the heroic destroyers inflict or receive this damage? What made them herioc? And which vessels are we talking about? A native English speaker could also have been of great help. Ltzow's name is consistently spelled wrong as Lutzow (Luetzow would have been better)
2) The technical information on Ltzow is essentially zero except what's mentioned in the text. No data or tables indicating, e.g., changes in armament. No discussion on the merits (or absence thereof) of the pocket-battleship concept. This is surprising as the author modestly describes himself as the producer of "the best current information about the technical evolution and camouflage schemes of the major Kriegsmarine warships of World War II".
3) The quality of the printing on the picture is downright bad, not even matching the quality from my inkjet printer. There are lots of compression artifacts and the (few) images lack all detail. I suppose some pictures are newer or not published before but picture-wise it is clearly no match for Koop & Schmolke.
4) Then there are the color schemes. For example pages 27, 29, and 40 look so much alike I cannot even see any difference except some replaced life rafts and no difference is spelled out in the text (I can name more combinations of seemingly identical images). I suppose most of the efforts went into the drawings, but there isn't even an indication what colors were used so it's of little use for modelers without additional information. Sure, there are many camouflage schemes and perhaps some are better than others. Unfortunately, there are very few pictures to compare the schemes to and the pictures on pages 28, 30, and 36 show schemes not covered in the book which strikes me as odd.

I think the publication would be much nicer it the history would have been deleted and the focus was more on the modeling part; larger prints of the camouflage schemes, changes to the ship clearly lined out, and exact color information. Almost half the book is a double side plus top view of the ship, mostly the same gray.

Congratulations Antonio! :thumbs_up_1:
Is your new book Deutschland/Lutzow-specific, or does it cover any of the other ships of the class?

Ciao all,

@ EJ Foeth,

I really wait for your feedbacks, ... as you are a very competent guy and surely you can evaluate quality of the work done and the ship unknown photos utilization and captioning.

Ciao Antonio :thumbs_up_1:
