For width of ships deck planks we had a discussion on Russian forum using famous photo of Winston Churchill on King George (I may be wrong with the ship but it does not matter) and proportions of his height-to-width.

Look at the photo - it is self-explanatory. The sizes are in mm. So the width of the plank is 184 mm which in 1:350 would mame 0,5 mm. I do cutting 0,5 mm strips from Tamiya masking tape by 'eye-measure' so it is overscale but still more or less proportionate.

Same method can be used to find length. Attached second picture is an example of wooden deck where you can see individual planking. I estimate its length roughly around 5-6 meters which would give 1,4-1,7 cm in length in 1:350.

By the way I have noticed that planking on various ships can be of different sizes (especially ships of different years, navies, etc. - the KGV on the first picture (or whatever but definitely that of HMS) deck planking look wider than planking on the second picture which is different ship which I do not know. So the photo of the real ship you are making is your best friend :big_grin:

Thus if you want to give 'planks' on your decks the proper size, the method I have described above can be better - while it uses the same in principle as Molders' method - it is different by been 'vise versa': you paint the whole deck one color and then 'glue tape strips on' the deck (instead of removing them) and paint new paint above. Cutting tape on a piece of glass with metal ruler to get proper size is much easier then on the deck with all those skylights, etc. I believe.

thanks for mentioning the "length" - issue. In the project above i completely failed in this context. I made it just in some "sense of proportion"-style. Not a very good idea maybe. There is much way to improve of course.
I think without a good picture, taken at object�s deck or at similar vessels its not easy to determine whats the correct lenght. But with the help of such a picture modelers should be able to get a idea how long such a plank was.
I think the width of the planks in the example above is also a bit over scale.
And all this with the background that i did have pictures of the deck! Tssss.....
I will consider about this in the upcoming projects.

I will often mix colour across the whole deck in a poor attempt to show the decking as used by people walking up and down, in scale and truth it looked rubbish but I seem happy to continue to use this on my models, on the planking described by M�LDERS while looking very good, how long would those planks actually be ? Also, when building, painting, and of course weathering the model, while it looks great to the eye, the camera doesn't always pick out what you see or what other people see, a lot of time, scale models are best seen one on one so to speak, obviously not always possible.

i had some good experieneces with a quiet circumstancial technique. (i have to admitt.)
But the result it worth th work i think.

Brand name for the pigment is Nena Acqua Cor, but it is locally manufactured.
I think you can search some similar near you.

There are acrilics pigments coloured in "wood" that you can apply on plastic. Just prime it with acrilics paint then with the pigment and then you'll have the wooden effect. I think it is very easy.

I have used several methods (on same deck :smallsmile: ) which I learned from this forum.

Another one http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/ships/sms/sms-konig/350/p2/sms-konig-p2.html In addition to what is described by Andy I airbrushed the whole job (after removing strips) by 70 solvent/30 basic wood color to smoothen the contrast between planking. I do not like sharp contrast between planking - in my subjective opinion in reality it shall be less visible. You will understand what I mean after reading Andy's article :smallsmile:

I did it for the first time using basically the approach as described by Andy Elwood and finished by applying a portion of the tips of Jim Baumann and can say that I am satisfied with the result. Pic of my deck.

As the others have said, there are heaps of factors to consider when painting your wooden deck. Generally a good simple technique I use is to paint the wooden areas a flat black first, and then apply several rough coats of whatever deck colour you've chosen to use. That way, some of the black shows through, and gives the effect of weathered wood. That's a pretty amateurish technique, but i've got some good results. If you're after something more complex, i'm sure someone else has a better method than mine!

Are you talking about replacement wood decks? If so, I think I read that acrylics and other water-based paints are not a good idea as water causes wood to expand, and thus it would be better to use oils like enamel paints instead.

I can't honestly give you an answer for this question as this will greatly depend on a number of factors, sunlight, winter conditions, wooden deck painted over, the correct colour brown or light grey, a dark wash between the planking, on my models I like to see them either crisp or weathered with some soot or oil stain just rubbed here and there.

How do you paint 1/350 wood decks.
For sure you have more experience in this area. i was thinking painting the wood deck with acrilics and maybe some washes with darker colors. Do you have any tip for this. Greetings
