I'm not 100% certain about this, there is most certainly somthing there that attracts the eye, arrangements of the signal flags, or the 'just right' amount of distance between the ships, the choppy sea, whatever it is, this looks great, congratulations look forward to seeing this in the gallery. :woo_hoo:

The reason for my late response was a voyage to Japan. Unfortunately besides joining a conference there was no time for shopping (You can guess what.).

doog_k you are right. I got some inspiration from this famous picture which seems to be the Chikuma

Kym, when I see your dioramas I am always very near to changing my mind to build the ships in harbor or in a lagoon, preparing for action. With all the gangways, small boats, cranes and so on this has an incomparable atmosphere. :thumbs_up_1:

How the hell did I miss this! Dirk, what superb builds mixed with excellent photography. Truly an impressive site seeing this lot coming at you. One of the main reasons I don't like doing multi 1:350 scale ships underway is the closeness the ships must be in the limited dio space (way too close in reality) or the wasted space if they were positioned more relative to the actual distance between them, but your photography seems to have captured it perfectly.

Dirk i kind of thought about it at first i just didn't want to believe it and you know why? the angle of the picture tricked me good :big_grin: it's great to know you can take the whole thing apart though, but still it looks like one big display just like Kym's. oh, BTW thanks Dirk!!

Sorry for the delayed comment :)
It looks very good and although with those close ups, it appear that you have sprayed your primer from too far (it makes those textures, with the primer being dry when reach the model), it is still an excellent model.
Will you bring this dio to next year trip of the German Gamblers to SMW? (hint hint)

Jose, your logic is right but it's in both shots the same model of Yamato. This is possible because my Dio is flexible. The base is also not large. Every model is mounted on a separate shelve with the size 80 cm x 20 cm. I used an additional shelve with the size 80 cm x 40 cm with only water simulation and no ship attached.
I can put these shelves together in every possible combination. If the camera is on "eye level" with the ships, the transitions between the shelves are not visible. I used the silicone (polysiloxane) method which has one disadvantage: The silicone is aging, after a year the transparancy will be partially lost and it becomes yellowish. Maybe you can see this in the "fleet-parade" below (oldest: Yamato, Yukikaze; Newest Chokai, Tone).

I never put the Yamato in the gallery because this was my first model where I used PE and I am not satisfied with the weathering (too much) and the rigging (too thick). But the model is good enough to be in the background (especially a little bit out of focus, giving three-dimensionality to the picture).

That dio is simply :big_eyes: spectacular Dirk! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: looks to me the Dio's base is a monstrosity in size.. Gilbert after reviewing these last shots carefully i think not only Yamato is included but Musashi too. "Retreat" shot shows another BB and from the size of its beam and boat deck design it's Musashi if Yamato is following Tone as Dirk wrote. now i'm really tempted to see the whole thing.

Yesterday I submitted pictures to the gallery. But I still have some more close ups showing some more details.

This is a close-up of the bridge area. I used brass strips with a thickness of 0,1 mm and different width to model the wind baffles. I increased the window openings of the bridge and segments of PE ladders for the window frames. Above the main range finder you can see examples of rivets and a weld seam (Archer surce details).
At first I did not want to use the voice pipes coming in the Veteran optical set because they are really tiny. But after painting them in brass I think they look quite cute.

Here in this picture you can see the struts for the awnings (GMM Takao Gold PLUS Takao Details PE set). I used "invisible threat" between them (can be seen when you know its there). Guess which ship is following here.

For the linoleum covered deck I used the brass capstrips from the same GMM PE set.
To simulate the ropes (for splinter protection) I used simple sewing thread (When it is painted with enamel paint it looks much better.).

In the first picture the handling deck for the floatplanes of Tone is shown (port).

I substituted all floatplanes from YMW by Tamiya floatplanes (I took them from my Mogami Hybrid kit which is waiting for construction.) I hope that Tamiya will start to sell these nice planes separately.
