George,

Well, for me it was another stay in the hospital. Had to have a repair of last May's AAA surgery, I herniated the scar. The day after this one, there was a massive blood clot, so they had to go back in to fix that. An overnight stay turned into a week. 34 metal clips later and a huge swatch of mesh, I hope to be done with all this. Still can't sit in a chair for more than 15 or 20 minutes.

BTW, I'm waiting for the WEM twin forty mounts to come out, should be soon.

Rick,

That is a great shot! The gear box and motor are shown. I was confused because the large scale drawing from FD does not have the two motors or the gear boxes for train and elevation. Once again You have the answer.

I'm a little unsure of your question. All twin 40-mm mounts were powered with a manual back-up. There are different Mods of the twin 40-mm mounts and I can't keep them straight. I don't know if they still can be operated or not, but the quad 40-mm mounts on USS NORTH CAROLINA museum could be manually trained and elevated. It was kind of cool for my sister and I (we were in High School) to operate a mount by ourselves in 1968.

Hi Rick,

I saw the announcement, I knew if I started this project someone would come out with a mount. BTW, do You have a clear shot of the Post refit mounts on Nichloas. The drawings from Floating Drydock are dated 1943, but show what looks like a manually aimed mount. The Ordnance Pamphlet#6 shows a powered mount. I can't tell from the photos as in most shots the mounts are covered with canvas. Thanks for any help You may give.

Hey in case you guys didn't notice, WEM announced today that they are going to make 1/144 scale twin 40-mm mounts with PE in the near future.

Sean and Les,

I asked the wife about the pressure cooker, no go, she's had it for years and doesn't want 'chemicals' in it. Don't have a powered vacuum pump, just a Harbor Freight hand brake bleeder. I can get 22in of Hg but it takes about 200 strokes and the resin only has a six min. pot life. What I'm doing now is pre-loading the mold's small areas with resin, then clamping together. Once together I use a 3cc syringe to push the resin through the mold. Seems to work very well. I'll show more photos in the coming days.

I know an outfit that does pressure casting and gets great results. It seems like a good way to go. If your parts aren't too big you can use a pressure cooker for the vessel.

I've never found that anything less thatn 25 in of Hg made any difference- for most home shops, pressure casting is a better way to go. ( I much prefer vacuum casting, don't get me wrong). It's just too hard to pull a deep enough vacuum quick enough- your normal HVAC pump just isn't powerful enough.
