Thanx Guys,
I thought it a great idea to eventually get down to doing a sea diorama and now i have, i am realising its not as easy as i thought !! Any ideas of the acrylic colours to use in order to reproduce an authentic looking North Sea? Alan

A while back, I read in a beginning artist's guide that a sky should be painted with a mix including a bit of Burnt Sienna - a rich brown color.

Since then, I have always added just a dab of that to the blues and greens I use for water.

Like everything color-wise, I think there is a considerable amount of personal opinion in the mix.

This is in addition to the gloss that was mentioned in posts above.

Alan, personally my favourites are dark sea blue or prussian blue to deep waters. To white I use oil paint and works fine. Also, after the pain is dry a fine coat of gloss varnish is good to protect it.

Nice to see you around again, I use mainly black with any darker blue I have around. Look at photographs and the sea away from the coast looks much darker than you would expect so about half and half black to blue is what I use, with a bit of green chucked in. Don't overdo the white though otherwise your ship looks like it is sailing on a sea of merangue. Where the wake is thrown up I go with more of a green shade. Then lots of kleer to make it shiny and wet looking, splash that about a bit on the hull as well.

OK guys need some tips,
When attempting to create realistic looking water what are the best acrylic paints to use? I was thinking of a Mediteranian appearance using cobolt blue and ultramarine but am not to sure any help gladly appreciated. Alan
