Great job on the flag Drik!! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: must've been a pain to paint the meatball  Jim's technique is superb and i will intend to do it with my Myoko i still have 1 set of LArsenal's figurenes, i think i won't be adding any of the Fujimi's this time i'll hate to see 2 different kinds of figures i don't know fujimi's figures look so damned bulky!!

Jim, thanks for your sympathy. I will miss all the exciting ship models presented at Telford.
The only consolation is that I am sure you will again provide good pictures of the models (Okay, I have to admit that seeing the live thing is something else.).
Whatever, I wish you and all the other ship models a lot of fun and success.
And thank you for your comment and the tips for painting the white dressed sailors. Your result is gorgeous. (The sailors look so real.). For most of my crew it is too late. They are already in place.

Here my progress: I could not resist to add a hi no maru to turret A.

It is not likely that it was used during the march and the battle of Surigao Strait because a lot of US planes were in the air. But there was also the danger of a Kamikaze attack on the own ships.
For the flag I used again Teflon tape, a material with which I fall in love.

Dirk

such a shame you and Mogami will not be at Telford....

model is looing sharoper by the minute!!

Here is what I do with white uniformed figures...

Use a sharp propelling pencil--sharpen on 1000 grit sandpaper.

Use this to draw in the separation line of face to hat/(hatband in some navies.

Also the separation line twixt top and trousers, hands to cuffs etc ect

everywhere where shadow would appear, draw a really thin line--it helps the crew get a more 3-D effect.

I also paint the crew off-white--and high-light the shoulders, and front of trousers, sleeves etc with hard white

here are some of my French crew from my Bouvet WIP

WOW, Dirk that is a sensational build. Gee if my Tamiya Mikuma in 1/350 is one-tenth as good as your Mogami, I'll be happy. Love the rigging and the weathering.

Thank you, gtbred and Marek! :wave_1:

I continued to add ropes for splinter protection (Mogami205).
Mogami205
Mogami205
In this area I used real thread (Mogami206).
Mogami206
Mogami206
Here (Mogami207) I used PE ropes (Rb7009 rope) from Rainbow. (They are for scale 1/700. Maybe too coarse for that scale, but perfect for 1/350.)
Mogami207
Mogami207
Rainbow as a newcomer has already some cool PE frets out (see at http://www.rainbowmodel.com/default.asp).
The 1/700 frets Rb7014 Accessory of bridge, Rb7003 IJN Anti-air platform rail (errors on their homepage) and the hanging ladders are very cool. They also have PE cockpit frames! And unbelievable: check out the 1/350 hanging ladders RB3003. They can be folded and produce rows of step irons. I waited so long for this in 1/350! I bought already a lot of these goodies at Hobbyeasy http://www.hobbyeasy.com/en/category/SH ... /RAIN.html

IJN Mogami (Tamiya 1/350)

by Dirk » Wed Sep 29, 2010 5:37 pm

Thank you, Christian! :wave_1:
I really can not tell you how much time I spent.
But now the end is near. I started to improve some weak points. I removed the coarser thread for the rigging I used before and substituted it with UNI-Caenis (compare Mogami203 with Mogami201).
Mogami203
Mogami203
I also substituted the coarse PE part of the crane (before in Mogami204) by UNI-Caenis (after in Mogami204).

Hi Dirk,

fantastic work :thumbs_up_1: The rigging looks very well!

Do you know how many time you have spent until now to build Mogami?

Thanks Dan for your comments and info. Very welcome. There is always something to learn.
I finished now the rigging using only the UNI-Caenis 20den with a diameter of 48.8 m. Electron microscope pictures of this material are here:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=59072
For the signal flags (Mogami197) I used now Teflon tape and hand painted it. My trials with masking the Teflon with Tamiya masking tape were not successful: The glue in the masking tape attacks the Teflon chemically.
Mogami197
Mogami197
The rigging is now very thin and I added a lot of white isolators to make the rigging visible to the naked eye.

Fantastic work, esp. the rigging, Dirk. Scuppers unlikely to be changed during her rebuild and white rangefinders for ID discontinued by early-mid 1943. FWIW, Dan

Thats the picture Dirk and i can see what you are saying about the shades of colors. im contrasting the range finder to the turrets, it makes sence is the light what makes these look less grayer.

Thanks Jose for your help. :wave_1: Very likely that these parts are scupper pipes.
J. Soca wrote:here is something else while i was looking at the shots i found one that shows the main range finder on top of the bridge painted white, at least it looks white to me possibly a 1944 refit.
Do you referring to the picture of Mogami on page 15 in the book Kojinsha IJN Photo File #12: Mogami- & Tone-Class (Warships Of The Imperial Japanese Navy" Mogami, Mikuma, Suzuya & Tone)?
If yes I think that the main range finder is grey and only in full light (other parts appear darker due to shadows.). On the left side there is white canvas over the frame of the accommodation ladder. I think that this is real white and it is lighter then the main range finder.

Dirk im looking at those pipes right now on a picture from one of my books, "Warships Of The Imperial Japanese Navy" Mogami, Mikuma, Suzuya & Tone volume.i can only see those 2 pipes on the starboard side i've gone through all Mogami's shots i got here and i can't see those in any other place than the starboard side. This book has few shots of the ship in 1944 and most of them were taken on the ship which means there are no hull shots whatsoever.. i could be wrong but those could be scupper pipes to drain the water from deck. there is something else while i was looking at the shots i found one that shows the main range finder on top of the bridge painted white, at least it looks white to me possibly a 1944 refit. let me know if you want to take a look at it. i'll be glad to scan it

IJN Mogami (Tamiya 1/350)

by Dirk » Sat Sep 18, 2010 9:42 pm

Thanks Marek and Jose for your comments. Marek, it is not the first time that I followed your advice: I softened the contrast of the different shades of grey on the hull.
I completed the details in the stern region (Mogami190).
Mogami190
Mogami190
I followed the Miyukikai plan and unbelievable in the book Kojinsha IJN Photo File #12: Mogami- & Tone-Class there is an original picture of Mogami (page18) showing the end of the floatplane handling deck with details of the stern.
I decided not to use the monofilament thread I employed for my former models Tone and Chokai (1 in Mogami191). Instead I will do the complete rigging of Mogami with Uni-Caenis 20den (2 in Mogami191). To avoid disaster I will make this invisible thread more visible by adding tiny white isolators.
Mogami191
Mogami191
I added hull details (marked with black x in Mogami192) following the Miyukikai plan (In pictures showing Mogami in 1935 these parts are visible.
Mogami192
Mogami192
I am not sure if they were still there in 1944. I also dont know what they are for (pipes for cooling water or part for holding the bulge? Can anybody help?). The following pictures demonstrate the weathering of the hull.

Looks good, but is a bit too strong for me. I would agree about further filtering.
