You must be a surgeon to work in such a small scale.

redoctober27 (love that moniker, btw) - Well, I prefer brass rod for masts because it takes the strain of my fishing line rigging better. Some of the PE masts, like those for the 1/700 Kagero class as done by FineMolds under their own name, or for Aoshima as a generic, are extremely well detailed, and to scale. But, they are more subject to bending under all but the lightest amount of pressure. If you were not planning to do rigging, then I'd suggest the PE versions. I like to scratchbuild the extras but, Rainbow makes some fantastic PE mast accessories that can attached to brass rod, if you're so inclined.

Elvis965. - Thx so much. This build was actually completed in 2011 (check the posting dates :-) ) and my Ushio actually took BOS at MosquitoCon 2011. However, this Shirakumo model did take BOS at the following RepliCon 2011 a few weeks later. It was a good year.

really nice, Dan!

I'm betting on a best ship at Mosquitocon!

Question Dan K what do you prefer for destroyer masts ... That they be made out of brass rods or photo-etch ? Which. Is more realistic and offers more detail?

Hmm, let's see. Early war canvas is basic white with a just a drop or two of Desert Yellow in it, so it's not a stark white. Late war is a buff mix with white; I'm not sure of the exact mix because it was mixed along time ago.

Masts are a variety of brass rod: .014" for the lead leg in the foremast, .012" trailing legs and rear mast, .10" for the main yardarms. I would suggest going to my gallery and then to a particular ship. I usually list what PE I used. If you need more, let me know........

Absolutely beautiful Dan!! I can only hope my 3 Kagero class destroyers well turn out as nice as your ships do. The Fubuki class is one of my favorites..well all the destroyer classes are actually. Did you ever find your notes on what type and color of Tamiya paints you used for the railing? Also what did you use for the mast as far as PE and rods? And lastly for rigging?

Why, thank you, Geno. Yes, the hull in this build is from the Tamiya Hatsuyuki kit (which is actually only good for a short forecastle Type I, Hatsuyuki not included), as is the bridge base & funnels. Everything else is either from a PitRoad kit or scratchbuilt. It was a fun build for me.

I have a soft spot in my heart for the good old Tamiya 1/700 destroyers. In their day they were fantastic little models. I made all of them way back before photoetch and I still have them mixed in my display case along with my newer Skywave kits.

I very much enjoy all of your posts. I thought I knew a lot about the IJN but not anymore! Thanks.
I believe the hull is from Pit Road. The lines look to good to be from the old Tamiya kits. Very nice dan. I can only imagine how many hours of refferance went into this one, not to mention the labor. :cool_2:

Yes to Tamiya paint but it's a mix to represent a darker, late war canvas. I can't remember which colors I used offhand. I've got notes somewhere.

Thanks very much, my friends. Only one other pic from this stage and not so great, below. Progress has slowed yet again.

What's the issue with the RDF shack? Ideally, you are mating a vertically rectangular cube (RDF shack) with a cone (searchlight) support, both same height, topped with a railing enclosed platform that holds a searchlight and RDF loop antenna. (Type I setup is different than Type II, so don't use this build as a guide.)

Beautiful :thumbs_up_1:

After seeing this, I am now considering throwing my Japanese destroyer build in the trash!

The finish line is within sight. Small bits, boats, AA, another bank of TT, touch-ups to go.

Almost there. I thought she would be done by New Year's but that was not to be. Soon. Raw daylight, and still this batch of photos is grainy. Hmm.
