Provenance? So close to #17 as to be the same.

#16 seems to be in substitution for what is usually assumed to be #17 in the official drawings and tables, so I believe it must have been a color, not a spray blend:

I'll just go with #17 from WEM / S&S.

I'm sorry I can't be of much help here, it's not one I've come across. I did recently post [url=http://www.researcheratlarge.com/Ships/S19-7/1948NovemberSSColors.html]this[/url], but it makes no mention of a #16, nor does Randy's [url=http://www.shipcamouflage.com/paint_listing.htm]list of paints[/url] circa 1943.

You're refering to "shade 16"?

Take a look at Page 55 onward in http://www.dt.navy.mil/cnsm/docs/NAVSHIPS250-374.pdf
I know the publication date is well after the war but there is specific mention of:
"(B) Effectiveness and Suitability. This measure (formerly
listed in NavShips 250-631 as No. 32/3SSB) is applicable
to Fleet-type submarines. (Measure SS 27 F uses the newer
deck paint mixture; otherwise measure SS 27 F is identical to
32/3SSB.)"
Could "newer deck paint mixture" refer to an improved durability mix rather than a new color?
It sort of looks like achieving a shade by fading one paint color into another by spray gun technique. Feathering, if you will.

Russ - It's "[u]a[/u]" neutral gray, not "[u]the[/u]" Neutral Gray - I know what that is. :cool_2:

I'm asking - What is "shade # 16" mentioned in the link.

The other colors are all in the "neutral grays" placed in use in 44-45 which eliminated the purple-blue and used only black and white in their mix.

This color is shown in the countershading submarine drawings in the link.

Neutral Grey is FS36270
It is the current color standard for the vertical surfaces of US Navy ships.
It does not accurately match any US WW2 color.

Note that the first digit in the FS number indicates the "finish" 3 indicates Matt finish. 1 indicates Gloss and 2 indicates Satin

was neutral Ocean Gray #17 subbed for this - if not, what is a close approximation (FS or model paint ) for this color ?
