Interesting, these got me thinking of the early mold Matsu 12.7's also. The barrels on those guns had an unusual over-sized look to them that I had always regarded as a crude and misguided attempt at something like a US style 40mm recoil spring.
The
semi-translated HLJ literature refers to quite a few ships associated with these guns, from CV's and BB's to CA's. If this is correct, and these are indeed the latter B1 variant, I would think it opens a can of worms as to when these were refitted on each ship. Perhaps nit-picking to some, but few things say IJN as loud as a type 89.
