Mike , card models are an excellent place to learn to scratchbuild turrets and assemble hulls and such. Plus spend an evening going through the scratchbuild section here. The thing about casting is if your scratchbuilding something with a lot of secondary armament. You only have to scratch one really good one and cast identical copies for the balance of the ship. In the article, explain how to create the master part

What baffles me is, how do you create the master part that the mold reproduces? In the article, please explain how to create such master parts.

I'm not really interested in buiding anything huge. But, yeah there's definitely some things I'd like to build that no one makes for some of my dioramas. I could use that information..Go ahead!

Hi Sean,

It happens to be in 1/144 scale. Comes in three pieces, actually.

The gun casing, the barrel, as well as the base.

Warm regards,
Chin Wen

I can't tell you when the article will be done. I have to fit it around doing gallery updates, building stuff, work and all my honey-do projects.

Liew Chin Wen- what scale Oto Melera? I assume it's one piece, or is the barrel seperate?

by spikesliew » Tue Oct 04, 2005 9:42 am

Ooops.. Seems like i'm a bit late in the post.

Looking forward to the article, Sean!

I've a 76mm Oto Melera gun from an old kit that's out of production, and i've always wondered how on earth can i cast another one without wrecking that precious one.

A.S.A.P

If you don't know what that means. Go back to school :lol_3: :lol_3:

yes, estimated time of arrival. as to when will he be posting the article?

by kennylibben » Sun Oct 02, 2005 11:56 am

Good, Glad to hear it! Just kidnap the girl next door... thats what i always do when i need a hand! :heh:

What is the ETA?

FYI

by Sean Hert » Sun Oct 02, 2005 11:40 am

The article is in progress. Man, it's hard to take a photo with one hand while you pour silicone with another and steady the mold with another.

A-ha! You see the problem!

Plus, you know, writing sucks; I keep thinking "man, I should be building something...."

Soon guys, I promise.

Other techniques also

by Pieter » Sun Oct 02, 2005 9:47 am

As I'm slowly moving into scratchbuilding most of my models I am very interested in techniques that make it possible to cast large numbers of small parts like ships boats, vents, winches and fairleads. For a currently 'sleeping' early 1900's liner project (Campania; hull is finished) for example I need to make 20 small vantilators, 10 large ventilators, 20 ships boats, 16 cleats, 10 faisleads and 8 steam winches in 1/700. An article in which different techniques are covered for making large numbers of small fittings like this wouls be very nice indeed. So far I have had limited success with casting ships' boats in plaster using ordinary rubber but this does not give the kind of detail I need fro winches etc.
NB forget buying the Academy Titanic as a parts source. Boats are hopeless, not enough of them (surprise..), and the rest of the small parts was unique to Harland & Wolff designed ships.

Vic,

they are all located in the Articles page.

I welcome this too! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

In fact, it would be a good idea to have a Forum, just dedicated to How To Articles.

Mouldmaking could just be the start. A forum dedicated to other modelling techniques, such as Using Fibregalss & Resin, Casting with Resin, Airbrushing etc, which would all make good teaching subjects, for the less experienced. :thumbs_up_1:

not sure... just a generic one i can put on nearly any ship.

If you have a mold for it your my new hero. i'd love to get ahold of it or a copy of it. i tried fashioning some out of nails and wood and plastic but let me tell you... im about as good at that as i am at talking politics with werner!

by Sean Hert » Mon Sep 05, 2005 12:37 pm

Kenny- do you mean the 12.7 AA guns? I still have a mold for them, I think. It's one of my early ones. I'll check.

by kennylibben » Mon Sep 05, 2005 12:34 pm

yes, if i could figure out how to cast a generic mold of those pesky AA guns i could outfit my Kumano with them and probably sell them to the rest of the Buckeye Battle Squadron!

Very much interested indeed! :thumbs_up_1:
