I moved this down to the Camo section for safe-keeping.

Dropped into a local paint trade store and got a 500ml pot of N42 and a 500ml of N63 both in acrylic. The Storm Grey looks to be stop on with the nice hue of green in it. The N63 pewter for the decks is a very deep grey.....more than I was expecting but I'll give it a go. All up it only cost me $11.50! :thumbs_up_1:

I'm doing a bit of research on when the RAN adopted Storm Grey and my current estimate is around 1954, when the navy switched to new a new paint formula. HMAS Queenborough seems to have been the test ship, and as the story goes the early batches did not adhere well. In fact Queenborough's XO is said to have typed up his complaint on a sheet of the paint that had peeled off. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Thanks guys. I take it that this paint scheme came in during the 70's?

Now I find this out

A few years ago I built the 1/350 Vampire into teh Vendetta (My father last ship) There was a boat builder down teh rao from Work that had some RHIB's in his shop, He provided me with a fibreglass cutout which gave me teh colour. I then went and made my own bend from Tamiya acrylics. It was a great match

Yes you are right there is a very strong greenish hueand te grey is much lighter than USN

On a 1:1 ship the colour is AS2700 N42 Storm Grey alias BS381C 631 Light Grey and deck is AS2700 N63 Pewter alias BS381C 632 Dark Admiralty Grey.

WEM have those colours, also being a standard Australian colour Bunnings or the like can mix a sample up.

Dave

Modern Australian ships are painted in a colour called Storm Grey. This is an Australian Standard colour (AS2700) with the designation N42.

I had 1 litre tin of semigloss enamel mixed up just last weekend at the local Bunnings hardware store.

Hi Dave,

I understand that it is "Storm Gray". WEM used to make it but do not do so now. I did see a comment somewhere that it is a standard colour and you may be able to get some made up at Bunnings. Don't know how true that is though.

You might also check with the Aust National Maritime Museum. Vampire is looking very smart with new coats of gray a while ago
