Gentlemen,
I propose that this topic may be of interest and crosses the usual COSF lines. Recently I asked about flight deck numbers on Bogue class VCEs, there was another question concerning flight deck markings shown in a photo of Randolph, and yet another concerning the switch (back) to large shaded hull numbers after World War II.
I'm not certain we have enough information, but it seems to me that a central repository of what is known or suspected, discovered, etc. might not be a bad idea. I recall there is information about the use of small hull numbers (size and location) and another regarding letter markings for Auxiliaries.
Some questions unanswered:
When did Navy revert to large, shaded hull numbers?
When did Navy switch to the new "lo-vis" hull numbers?
When were flight deck numbers added? Size, color, ships, variations (smaller light colored versus larger dark colored)?
Feel free to dismiss this post and topic.
Regards,
Mac
