GREAT result-- especially after its from-the-shelf crash....--that is always very disheartening.....

Level of detail and sharpness is inspiring!

I have just shot some new pics of the H'burg...and am itching to start a new project also!

Dear friends,
thank you very much for your words of praise. They are especially flattering when they come from people who are capable of exceptional work themselves.
I will post much better pictures soon to be taken by a professional photographer - look for them in the gallery.
I have numerous commitments now, but in November I plan to start construction of the battlecruiser HMS Tiger (1:700 Combrig, with the addition of the WEM and Artist Hobby upgrade sets). I will provide a much more detailed WIP account of that build - in case anyone is interested.
Thanks again for the encouragement spurring my to further improve my work!

Dear all,
the ships is now practically complete. All I need to do is touch up the paintwork at places and populate the decks with about 70 crew members.
She will remain attached to this base for now - when I'm ready with HMS Tiger (not yet begun) they will share a common seascape.
I would like to thank everyone who have been following this thread for their kind words and encouragement. More and better pictures will follow in the gallery.

Dear Jim,
thank you for taking the time to check the pictures. I'm also under the impression that the Derfflinger didn't have a telescopic mast. It seems to be clear that in the final months of her career the fore topmast has been deleted. The best picture from this period is what I attach (if you have better pics showing this state, please share them with me). There seems to be a handful of such pics, presumable taken at the same occasion, from slightly different angles. Although some of them are of reasonable quality not many details of railing are discernible. Two strands of railing are faintly visible leading from to mainmast to the quarterdeck. I elected to omit these from my model because 1. they seem to be not just simple lines, but a complicated arrangement, but the details are not quite visible 2. I have never seen any other picture or model of the Derfflinger showing them 3. in my opinion they would upset the visual balance of the model. With hindsight to build the Derfflinger doesn't seem to have been a sensible choice as she has the least complete photo coverage of any of the Grosse Kreuzer.

Looking very good indeed

The fwd mast-and aft masts on the Hindenburg were telescopic--ie could be lowered to clear the bridges in the Kanal

I would guess that could be the case also on Derfflinger--

will have a look at photos

Looking at Derff images-- there does not appear to be the lower mast extension as on H'burg

so great theory but probably no truth )

Thank you gents.
The build is nearing completion. The mast are attached and the mainmast recieved its rigging as well.
My aim from the outset was to create the "ultimate" Derfflinger in 1:700. Now that intention seems to get compromised, because I'm unable to get usable information with regard to the rigging of this configuration - the last, without the fore topmast.
Thus it seems that my model will get a mixture of the previous rigging and something I was able to glean from the blurry photos that I had found.
Anyway, after the rigging only the installation of jack and ensign staff, anchor bouys, some loops of rope, and about 80 crew members is what's left to do. I'll be away for two weeks, but afterwards I will finish her swiftly.

Here's an update. The boats are in place, secured to their chocks. After correcting some (well, not so really) embarrassing faults first seen in these closeups, all that's left is the construction of the masts and flagstaffs, addition of some minor details and that of the crew.
Hope you're not all too tired of my Derff.

xxxcrush your praise is all the more precious to me after seeing your work. Now that is something extraordinary I don't think I can match!
I have proceeded with the build. The things still missing are:
boats, masts, jack and ensign staff, boarding ladders, three searchlights, rigging, crew and some minor details.
There's not all that much left.
