Thanks for the confirmation, Dan. I just couldn't believe that the concave was that extreme and what pictures I've seen didn't show the shaping either.

thanks

Cross-section plans for sister Ariake suggest that your hull line drawing may exaggerate the hull concavity a bit. FWIW.

Got a question for our esteemed board members that know far more about IJN ships than I. I have been contemplating the building of an IJN DD and to that end have collected some plans. The one I'm interested in, IJN Hatsushimo shows this for hull lines.

My question, did the ships actually have the concave hull sides as illustrated, or has this feature been misinterpreted?

What remained/was reconstructed of the superstructure of the ijn (manchukuo) Momo class destroyer Hai Wei (ex Kashi) when she returned in IJN service as an escort vessel?

Berend

Hi Mike

Thanks for letting me know. I can imagine that there is more work than one would believe at first sight. So ok, I won't hold my breath.

If you remember, I had planned to build a couple of ships of convoy Tei No. 2 of 20.09.1943, in 1/350 scale.
I already own the Heian Maru (just started it) and the Akitsushima (Hasegawa's resin/plastic/photoetch limited edition of a couple of years ago).

The destroyers involved were:

- Hibiki (Fubuki Type III)
- Makinami (Yugumo class)
- Yamagumo (Asashio class)

That's why the Fubuki III has interested me. Well, since I build as slowly as a glacier moves (almost), I will have enough time to wait.

There were also two more "Marus", the Kiyosumi Maru and Gokoku Maru. Since the Gokoku Maru was a sister ship of Hokoku Maru and Aikoku Maru, there would even be a small chance that Pit Road, who made this class in 1/700, would decide to upscale it.

In the meantime, maybe some company will release one of the destroyer classes missing for my project...

Thanks again and cheers,
Peter

Hi Peter,

That project has gone idle for now since every time I look at the thing the problems snowball. When I first started it, I thought it was mainly concentrated on the funnels and base superstructure base. To do an adequate conversion requires changes to the funnels, center and forward superstructures as well as both deck sections. People would also have to scratch build the fore mast and a host of other small details.

Since I've also fallen behind on my casting obligations, I'd say this fits in the, "Don't hold your breath" category. Sorry to have gotten your hopes up.

Mike

From FineMolds, no. From the resin caster considering the conversion kit, I'm not sure. I'll ask.

Said manufacturer has read this thread and is planning to resume work on the Type III conversion set. No timeframe as of yet.
Dan,

I suppose there are no news concerning a 1/350 Fubuki Type III?

Cheers,
Peter

The new Hasegawa Yugumos has a nicely molded one as well. PE versions can be helpful if changing patterns to one other than what's molded on.

The Degaussing cable looks really nice.

If all manufacturers do this, PE Degaussing Cables will become a thing of the past.

Some new Shimakaze built close-ups from the recent Shizuoka show, courtesy of Harukano Sugano's (@EnjakuHaruzono) Twitter feed. I have to say, it looks really good. The complexities of the wind vanes and the compass bridge deck ofthe Pit-Road version have been reduced to a couple of seams. Tamiya also provides the cross bracing of the mast in plastic, which did not come with the Pit-Road kit, IIRC.

OTOH, Pit-Road's detailing of the doors and hatches seems a little higher.

That box art is indeed beautiful! The painting guide in the sprue pic is incorrect, however; by the time Shimakaze was completed, the IJN had done away with painting names on DD hulls. She never would've carried it.

Some better photos of the new Shimakaze (T) kit, courtesy of a Modeling News posting. Box art is that classic Tamiya style, nice.

Thx for posting. It will be interesting to compare it to the Pit-Road version. Turrets look detailed with stiffeners, at least.

Tamiya is also showing a spray can form for Maizuru Navy Yard gray. Hopefully, we'll see that in the XF jar line soon.

Nice to see them use slide-molding for the turrets.

Tetra's PE is so... Clumsy, though...

"Thick" might be a better adjective.

They just seem to be very thick brass frets compared to five Star, Lion Roar, or Flyhawk, though.

But at least there is finally some PE for these.
