I have been having trouble using high-quality 'mineral spirits' available at art stores in Canada to thin White Ensign paints. I got a nasty 'tiny gravel' effect mixing Stevenson mineral spirits with White Ensign. Bits of emulsion floating around the thinner.
I found this caveat on one of my favourite suppliers' websites for the Stevenson spirits:

Damar (or dammar) resin is a really benign gum medium also used in food products. It has been used in paints since the 1800s:

I bought some Winsor & Newton white spirit and it seems to solve the problem.
Anyone else have this experience?
