Carl, with regards to the USS Ajax, it could be something as simple as ceremonial/visitors being done on the stbd side, also seems like she always had the Destroyers tied up on the port side negating the need for the port booms, just a thought.

While researching and building the USS Ajax AR-6 I found it curious that I'd see boat booms on the starboard side of the ship and not on the port side in many photos that I found of the ship. I thought that this was odd.

USS Ajax veterans on the FaceBook page verified, for me, that, that was true. Starboard side only. But, they could provide no reason for it.

I have a photo of this operational use of the boat boom that is dated 1931

This is a crop from a larger photo of Iowa at NY, 1943. The Port side Aft boat boom is rigged but not out. You can see the king post which sits in a deck fitting and supports the rigging lines. You can also see the fittings on the hull which support the boom when it is stowed.
