As an aside, the use of boot toppings didn't come about until ships started using fuel oil. The black band is to hide the oily film that floats on the top of the water and makes for a dirty waterline. In the coal era, no oil scum on the water, no need for boot topping.

Nice shot of DD1 on a very sunny day. The dark markings on her side are actually shadows from her lifeboats. So just a single colour. As orthochromatic film is involved, written references would be my choice to determine colour.

I was not aware of the whole Green thing.

Looks like Tamiya Black Green may be the way to go. Probably practice up my drybrushing skills as well.

Here's the pic I was thinking of before. I almost wonder if it's a combo of the green and gray.

Maybe I've answered my own question...

I need to quit thinking literally all the time and only look at [i]Bainbridge[/i] pics. Here's one of USS [i]Dale[/i]. Looks like same gray on the decks. I've also noticed that they didn't seem to use a boot topping, either.

Hi All,

I just got my ISW [i]Bainbridge[/i] in the mail recently.

Colors, as far as pre-WWI seem a bit sketchy, and I know she did wear a rather early camo scheme, too.

I'm looking at going the Slate Gray route. Would horizontal surfaces also be in the same color?
