Hi Michael,

First, nicely done. I've started the project the way you did with drilling out the port holes and sanding of the hull using your build a guide. I was wondering if you had any advice on the build having nearly finishing it. I guess my question is how was the part fit of the kit was. I envisioned building the hull up to the hanger deck then painting. I wasn't sure if the hanger deck walls fit well enough where I could just paint each wall and attach, or if there was putty work to be done to get a clean fit.

Thanks,
Jim

Hello @ all.

The ship is finished so far.... pictures of the finished model you will find in the gallerys / completed models.

Still missing some figures (once there are 3D-US Navy figures available).

Best regards.

Michael

Hello,
thank you very much :) :) :)

And the next steps....:

- After painting the bridge a washing of black oil colors followed.
- The windows were closed with Mirco Crystal Clear

Then the rigging followed with EZ-line. As there are no plans or detailed pictures of the original USS Hornet I used all that I could get. Pictures of models, black-white pictures of the original (where you could not see so much), and some pictures of books... I think it looks ok so far.
The flag is made of fabric and glued to the rigging.

Then I added all parts on the flight deck.... looks like this now:

Next steps... weapons.....

First painting was 5-H Haze Grey byLifecolor. Once dried I painted the next darker color (5-O Ocean Grey) on it, followed by the decks in 20-B Deck Blue. Finally all parts were painted once again with airbrush in 5-0 Ocean Grey.

The Nautilus Models wooden deck is painted in deck-blue firstly, then glued on the plastic deck which was painted in hull grey first. After that the complete deck is mounted on the hull. Here I had some smaller sanding and filling works on the finished paint.... no fun, but we made it. After that I have masked the deck for the markings which were brush-painted on the deck. After that a black oil color washing followed, then I have sanded the whole flight deck wo get some scratches and a little bit of wood visible under the colors. A final layer of dark brown oil color washing finished the deck for the moment.

Next task.... the bridge... firstly all portholes opened.... etched frames added... and doors.... then started with the bridge and the further add on parts......

Time for the weathering.....

Firstly some small blurs of black oil color were painted under most (not all) porthole, under the anchor hawse poles and under each corner. Then with brown oil color the same procedure again, but this time only at the anchor and other heavy used points.
White spirit colored with a little bit of black oil color now is painted on the complete hole... always from the top to the bottom.... bluring the oil color blurs from the portholes down....making the water drips on the complete hull....

On the decks same same procedure, but with a little more color in the mixture...

Now the oil color needs some days to dry..... during that time I can go on with the lifeboats, cranes, .....

Next steps.... mounting of all the etched parts on the hull... stairways, walkways, hand rails and lot of more. ALso the hangar doors were mounted. I have cut these in different sizes to variy a little bit more.....

Micha, awesome progress and such a cool idea to use the salt! I've never built anything with camo or weathering but that's definitely something new I've learnt and will keep it in mind for the future. :thumbs_up_1:

The masking of the waves.....
I have scaled the painting plan from Merit to the size of the ship and transferred the waves to a masking tape, cut it out and put it on the hull.... the area over the waterline at the bow and stern was masked with salt.....

Image

Image

Image

Then everything was painted in 5-N Navy Blue for the dark parts of the hull..... (on the following pictures with the walls of the hangar put on, but not glued yet)

After some time for drying I will wash away the salt, then mask the bow one more times as there is one last dark part missing which I decided before that it would be easier to mask and paint later separately. Then everything will be masked for painting of the under water part.... then the black waterline.... then adding the hangar walls to the hull... then the further parts mounting together, painting then adding (walkways, stairways, ...), then clear coat, decals, clear coat, wasing with oil colors, rust, rainmarks, clear coat matt..... and then one day later finished .)

The hull upper part is painted and received an overspray with darkend / lightend base color. The decks af the front and rear were painted as well, just have to make some corrections on the deck and on the walls, also on the 2nd deck at the rear at the place were the life boat will be.
Also some first details were on the decks were painted.

When the corrections were done, then I will make the masks for the waves on the hull, .... :)

@Goodwood: The colors are nowhere finished so far :)

The hangar deck, like other horizontal surfaces on U.S. Navy warships (e.g., the flight deck, the forecastle, the fantail, and the island), would have been Deck Blue, which is considerably darker than what you've got there, mate. Not saying that your efforts thus far aren't anything other than great, but I'd hate for such a monstrous build to be marred by a relatively elementary mistake.
