At an art supply store you can buy this stuff called "polymer varnish" which is essentially clear acrylic with slightly different properties that enable it to be easily thinned with tap water for spraying. It produces a really pretty matte, gloss, or satin final varnish or pre-weathering/decaling gloss. It has built-in UV filters which will also protect your model from fading/discolouring.
2 parts varnish-1part water and you're good to go with your airbrush.
Very even and invisible spraying. Water-based, but seems to adhere to any kind of surface. The matte is the mattest finish I've ever seen.
