Useful tools I use:
- Good sprue cutters useful for cutting off small plastic parts, and for numerous other delicate cutting tasks
- Good knife for general use, available from any good craft shop
- Swiss Army type knife with mini-scissors the scissors are so fine and sharp, will accurately cut any photo etch parts
- Mix of paint brushes, some fine for small details
- Ideally an airbrush, but some would say not essential

All you really need for a starter tool is a knife. Can either get a hobby knife like xacto, or a surgical scalpel. Then some glue that will work for plastic. Tape for masking paint, and brushes.

For 1/350 scale I would start with a smaller vessel. Tamiya has a good Flethcher destroyer. That was the first model I gave my little brother to build.

I am starting to get back into ship modeling after decades away. Am looking for advice on starter's tool sets and a decent starter kit in 1/350 scale. Thanks!! :-)
