None of the photos seem definitive; sometimes the mast base is covered by the canvas over railings, sometimes not. I suppose the left hand view seems closer to the mark.

Hi Dan,

pitty there is nothing in Nihon no Gunkan.
I attached a picture of the rear mast construction option so you get see how it looks. I think the left option is the as built option.

I'm not sure there is any difference outside of the foremast - pole for #s 1-4, tripod for #s 5-6. Nothing is indicated in the Nihon no Gunkan volume.

The five star 1/700 model of the W 1 class minesweeper has 2 options for the placement of the rear mast. One with the mast inside the railing and going through the floor of the deckhouse and one with the mast outside the railing and not going through the deckhouse floor. The instructions do not mention which units used which mast option as of which date. Which option was used as built and which units changed the mast position later on which date?

Okay, I checked my references in Model Art magazine and it was just the Okinoshima kit in the publication and not the Tsugaru. Okinoshima had an Alf until she was sunk in 1942. Reading Tsugaru's TROM the skipper of the US Sub that sank her saw a seaplane on her deck but, didn't mention as to what type. Also, I googled Tsugaru and saw a paper model of her and she was carrying a Jake on her catapult. In her TROM it didn't mention when it had its catapult landed in favor of more AA guns. The model depicts her in a late 1942, possibly early 1943 fit. I'm thinking now that they probably changed to a Jake to replace the aging Alf. If I come across anything more I'll let you know.

What was the aircraft carried by Tsugaru?
CombinedFleet and Wikipedia claim it was E7K2 Alf, while instruction/Profile Morskie suggest Aichi E13A Jake.

A 1/700 Okinoshima arrived in todays post.

The result of Wiki-searching it for some reason. Immediately it was impressive how the IJN expanded Okinoshima's capabilities beyond the original design mission. Truly a versatile ship with a variety of missions. Almost smacks of SpecOps in some of the ways it was employed. So it moved to the head of my wish-list real quick. That, and it can serve as interim flagship for the sea mule destroyer flotilla. At least until a Nagara can be acquired.

For now, regrettably, it goes into the stash. Need to build at least one more destroyer (for two total) until flotilla command is needed. Minelaying in my South Pacific will have to wait for a while as well.

i found a sketch of the Tokiwa in the US field manual from 1941 - but not enough details to built it...

@berend; thanks for mentioning the 104 manufacturer! They have some really interesting ships in 1/700, I will try to order some of them (esp. the Itsukushima). The Yaeyama looks pretty clean, but I have already ordered the old Kobo-Hiryu kit...

All,

has someone got models of this Japanese garage company: ???? ??????? I haven't found an English name or website of it yet. Therefore I don't know their complete product range. They have several auxiliaries including minelayers such as Itsukushima and Yaeyama on offer. I have orderd an Itsukushima and just received a couple of former Dutch vessels captured or salvaged by the Japanese and used by them as auxiliary sub chasers and minesweepers. These are off course very small in 1/700 scale. Quality is similar to that of Kobe Hiryu. I'm considering to order some more if I can find them so I can build the Dutch and the Japanese versions.

Another new arrival is the Namikaze in her 1945 fit from Frogfoot which was used as a minesweeper. Now I don't have to convert a plastic models stern of this class which I find something difficult to do.

Both mentioned companies don't supply all components needed to build the model. Parts of Pitroad weapon series are needed and to my suprise for the Frogfoot model plastic parts of the Pitroad Minekaze model are needed.

I would welcome a pe set for the Okinoshima and Tsugaru too. I have the Joe World set for the Tsugaru wich is a nice addition to the Fujimi set. But unfortunately Joe World didn't create one for the Okinoshima.

Attached a picture from the web showing the Yaeyama hull supplied by the first company mentioned above.

Finally another in my opinoin usefull pe set is the minesweeper no 19 of Ingenuity Model.

Hey Folks!
Could anyone help me out with a picture or plan of the Tokiwa in her minelayer configuration?? I'm thinking about converting the ship from Seals Models to the WW2 fit, but I couldn't find useful pictures/plans on the web.

Navypedia gives some info on the armament changes, but doesn't provide much more

Are there any Japanese websites that have 1/700 builds of the Minelayer Shirataka? I have my 1/700 plans from the Model Art 33 issue, but I would like to have more views and ideas on how to do it better.

Already cut out the hull halves and the deck but have not made the waterline plate yet. I have noticed that the Shirataka had a turtle back fore deck. I might be considering doing what Guido did for his 1/350 Perfect Storm build by using the sandwich method. I am new to scratchbuilding and am trying not to get frustrated during the process.
