The Egyptian Navy will receive its fourth and final Type 209 submarine from Germany�s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) in 2021.
The Egyptian Navy�s third Type 209/1400mod submarine (S43) arrived in Egypt on 5 May after sailing from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems� yard in Germany. It was officially handed over to the Egyptian Navy on 9 April in Kiel.
The contract for the delivery of the first two Type 209/1400mod class submarines to Egypt was signed in 2011. In 2015, Egypt decided to take the option for two additional units of the most recent version of the Type 209 family
About Type 209 submarine:
The average Type 209 has a crew of 30 and displaces 1 594 tons submerged. The type is 62 metres long with a 6.2-metre pressure hull diameter. It can dive to a maximum depth of 250 metres and is armed with eight torpedo tubes with 14 torpedoes.
Egypt�s new Type 209 submarines have a range of 11 000 nautical miles, a top speed of 21 knots and displacement of over 1 400 tonnes.
The Type 209/1400 mod series submarines are claimed to be are extremely reliable, can stay submerged for a long time, are fast, and are hard to locate thanks to their low signatures. It is the latest version of the HDW Type 209 �family� with over 60 boats built or under contract.

Egypt�s second Type 209 submarine passes Kiel Canal en route home

S42, the Egyptian Navy�s second Type 209/1400 submarine, has started her voyage home transiting the Kiel Canal on October 1.

The submarine is to head from the Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems shipyard to the Egyptian Navy base in Alexandria where she is expected to be welcomed on October 21.

En route to Egypt, S42 will meet up with corvette ENS El Fateh � the first Gowind 2500 corvette to be delivered to the Egyptian Navy by French shipbuilder Naval Group.

S42 was delivered to the Egyptian Navy in a ceremony on August 8, while the ENS El Fateh delivery ceremony took place on September 22.

Guten Tag Herr Held,

Exactly. They (China) don't fit into the scheme. That's why China's trying to convince the Egyptians to get out of the deal with you/Germany so they can get another foreign customer for the export variant of the Yuan class.

Nope, not the old stuff, maybe the 212s/214s...

And in February it was announced that two further subs had been granted to be built for Egypt. That means that we already built some for them. How does China fit into this scheme?

Which would you rather have your life depend on, a sub built in and by China, or a German product! Hell, the Chinese are probably stealing the designs from somebody else, that's why they can undercut the competition. But, with countries with limited military budgets a significantly cheaper Chinese sub might be very attractive, especially if you can buy more than one at fire sale prices. The Chinese government is also probably subsidising the deal so that the subs can actually be sold below production cost in order to build up a market with countries like Egypt and Thailand. And, of course, there is the issue of spare parts that could end up being somewhat more costly down the road.

What would the Egyptians want more? Chinese Yuan class or the latest German U-boats (Type 209s?)?

To think that a Chinese state shipbuilder was able to secure a deal to sell 3 subs to Thailand recently.

SINGAPORE/CAIRO (Reuters) - China is trying to sell two submarines to Egypt that are cheaper than vessels on offer from Germany, industry sources told Reuters, as Beijing looks to expand weapons exports beyond its traditional customer base in Asia.

Beijing has sought to undercut Western submarine makers on price and by offering attractive export-credit terms for sales in Asia, the sources said. It has won deals with Pakistan and Bangladesh so far.

China displaced Germany as the world's third-largest arms exporter, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said in March, though nearly 70 percent of those weapons went to Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar.

An Egyptian military source said China had offered to sell submarines to Cairo.
