Definitely go with something darker (phenolphthalein blue/green, for example), and check out the Compendium of Model Water Making links at the top of this forum.

I am no expert either but perhaps cobalt blue is too light for a deep ocean look. a very dark blue like Persian blue may look better, in my opinion. mixing several blues is a good idea too. also, adding a clear layer on top of the painted surface will help the illusion of depth. finally regarding the whitecaps I would suggest dry brushing white on top of the clear to highlight them. have you looked at some of sargentx's tutorials here? he is a master of creating convincing water bases.

hope this helps

Guys, I really need help with this. I'm trying to get it to look like a warm clear day in the mid-pacifc. I don't know how to continue with this. Do I start over? I painted the inside of the plastic base, not the outside, by the way. I don't know how to paint the wakes either. How should I go about this? I've been going through various threads on forums but haven't yielded many results that can really help me with this situation.

Thanks. I was thinking that earlier this morning shortly after I woke up.

I am no where near an expert, but I think if you were to add multiple blue colors it would look better. The whitecaps will help, but more shades of blue would be a large improvement in my opinion.

Good luck!

Hey all. Being new to the ship modelling game and all I'm wondering if this looks good enough to be construed as water. It's the vacuform base that comes with the Trumpeter 700th carriers painted with Cobalt Blue hue. I've never painted water before and I'm not sure how it came out. Just a note, I haven't painted on the whitecaps yet. I'll get to that as soon as I find out whether or not I should repaint it with a hint of gray or keep it.

Thanks for the help.

Also, if I should repaint it, should I stick to Cobalt Blue mixed with some concrete gray color? Or should I mix it with a different color? Or should I just get aa completely different color blue all together? If the latter, what color blue would you recommend? I've looked at metallic Cobalt Blue and Ultramarine Blue even but I didn't buy them.
