Model Monkey Cleveland class CL "Square Bridge"

by ModelMonkey » Mon Feb 29, 2016 8:35 pm

The design for an improved bridge for any "square bridge" Cleveland class light cruiser model kit is complete and has been uploaded to Shapeways.

This design is available in 1/700 scale and another in 1/600 scale.

Recommended for:
1/700 scale

- Blue Ridge Models 1/700 scale USS Miami CL-89 (# BRM-70036)
- Blue Ridge Models 1/700 scale USS Cleveland CL-55 (# BRM-70037 - conversion to sisterships)
- MidShip Models 1/700 scale USS Cleveland CL-55 (conversion to sisterships)
- Pit Road/Skywave 1/700 scale USS Miami CL-89 (# SKY-W23)
- Pit Road/Skywave 1/700 scale USS Cleveland CL-55 (# SKY-W22 - conversion to sisterships)
1/600 scale
- Lindberg 1/600 scale USS Manchester CL-83 (# 70861)

This multi-part model kit represents the "square bridge" of the US Navy's World War II-era Cleveland class light cruisers. It is intended as a more accurate replacement for the parts found in any 1/700 scale Cleveland class model kit. It can also be used to help convert any "round bridge" USS Cleveland CL-55 model to one of USS Cleveland's "square bridge" sisterships.

Depending on which kit you have, some adjustment to these parts or the plastic kit's parts may be necessary to ensure best fit. Acrylic plastic is very brittle, Trim, if needed, rather than force.

- CL-66 Springfield
- CL-67 Topeka
- CL-80 Biloxi

- CL-89 Miami
- CL-90 Astoria
- CL-91 Oklahoma City

Some part cleanup will be necessary. The 3D printing process uses a waxy substance to support certain part features. Although the parts are cleaned by Shapeways, some waxy residue may remain. It can be safely removed with water and a mild aqueous detergent like "Simple Green" using an old, soft toothbrush, Q-tips or pipe cleaners. Customers report that "Bestine" and "Goo Gone" also work well.

This set is available in "Frosted Ultra Detail" acrylic plastic (layers 29 microns thick) and "Frosted Extreme Detail" acrylic plastic (with layers 16 microns thick). During the printing process, liquid resin is cured by ultraviolet light. Microscopic bits of resin may remain uncured. Let your parts sit in direct sunlight for a few hours to fully cure the resin.

Water-based acrylic paints meant for plastics is strongly recommended. Other paints, especially enamels, may not cure on Frosted Detail 3D-printed plastics.
