V. Aviation, Boats & Deck Fittings

The Roma carried up to four aircraft of either the IMAN Ro 43 seaplane or Reggiane Re 2000 fighter. These aircraft were operated by air force personal (Regia Aeronautica).

There were several paint schemes used on aircraft at sea but the Roma's aircraft were all painted green. My blue Ro 43 is a nod to a prior livery. I wanted to bring something different out.

Rigging note: I used the kit's plastic yardarms. These are frail, flimsy objects and you can clearly see in several images that the stress from the lines has distended several spars. I may at some future point decide to redo the rigging. I tried to include around 50% of the total lines existent on the prototype. If possible I would encourage replacing these items with soldered brass or other metal.

III. Propulsion & Steering

Roma was equipped with eight Yarrow boilers. They were superheated with angled water tubes. There were four steam turbines from Belluzzo producing 130,000 shp at nominal full power. Littorio was able to produce 139,561 shp during her trial runs achieving 31.2 kts, oddly enough, Vittorio Veneto was able to achieve 31.4 kts running a heavier ship with less power. In practice, the type saw a top speed between 29 and 29.5 kts at full loading. There are four screws of a three bladed type. The outer pair were 4.6 meters in diameter and the inner pair were 4.5 meters. The kit, and the aftermarket, provides four identical propellers, a minor oversight. One of these propellers, from Vittorio Veneto, is still in existence above water.

Roma never underwent speed trials and so there are no full power trial statistics available. She did displace 41,650 tonnes at standard, light load at 44,050 tonnes, and full load at 46,215 tonnes making her the heaviest of the three averaging around a 500 tonne surplus on her older sisters at each loading.

These factors combined to give the type a range of ~4,580 nautical miles at 16 kts, ~3,920nm @ 20kts, and ~1,770nm @ 30kts with 4000 tonnes of fuel. Fuel burn was tabulated at 10 tonnes of fuel per hour for 13 kts, 15tfph @ 15kts, 19.5tfph @ 20kts, 25tfph @ 22kts, 36tfph @ 25 kts, 48tfph @ 28kts, and 65tfph @ 30kts.

Steering was provided by one primary rudder and two auxiliaries places well forward. This was designed to prevent catastrophic failure in the event of torpedo attack. In practice, this worked well, preventing Vittorio Veneto from suffering a Bismarck type death on one occasion. However, if the primary and one auxiliary rudder was incapacitated, the sole remaining auxiliary rudder would have been insufficient to tack (if the other rudders were not centered) without full control of all four shafts, unlikely in the event of truly catastrophic damage.

The ship could, at 20 kts, with a main rudder angle of 35 degrees, achieve a complete 360 degree loop in 6 minutes and 35 seconds creating a loop of a diameter of 885 meters.

Also the antifouling was green.

II. Weapons Systems

Roma was equipped with six different weapons systems to engage sea, land, and air targets with maximum effectiveness.

1. Primary system is the main battery of nine 381mm (15 inch) 50 caliber rifles in three three-gun turrets. Two forward, one aft.

2. Secondary battery consists of 12 152.4mm (6 inch) 55 caliber rifles in four triple turrets. One mount in each corner of the superstructure.

3. Tertiary battery and primary anti-aircraft system is made up of 12 90mm 50 caliber guns in stabilized single-gun turrets.

4. Twenty 37mm 54 caliber AA guns in eight twin and four single mounts.

5. Twenty-eight 20mm 65 caliber AA guns in 14 twin mounts.

6. Four single 120mm 40 caliber rifles equipped with star shells for illumination purposes.

There were 24 rangefinder in various positions.

1) The 381/50 guns were very powerful weapons developed out of the requirement to match foreign 16in./406mm performance without the investment in a domestic 406mm design. By increasing charge power, shell flight characteristics, and lengthening the barrels, the Italian 381/50 possesses the second longest theoretically maximum range of a traditional large caliber naval rifle behind only the Japanese 460mm/18.1inch. This incredible range came at a price: barrel life was, at best, 140 rounds per liner due to the extreme pressures. For contrast, the long German 38cm on the Bismarck was rated at 240 rounds.

A total of forty guns were produced. Only the nine lost on the Roma appear to have escaped the cutting torch.

Rate of fire tended to average around 1.3 rounds per minute. Around 45 seconds to reload and re-aim.

Much has been made of problems related to excessive dispersion or poor ammunition, however modern research does seem to point to a combination of factors preventing satisfactory performance at the time of induction. Time and resource constraints at the commencement of hostilities prevented the full work up of the weapons so necessary to good performance on all three ships. It was not until 1942 that the first two sisters began to shoot more effectively, at which point these ships were guarded very carefully. The first breakthrough in improving dispersion was to increase the delay between the outer barrels and the middle gun firing. Barrels simultaneously firing next to each other create tremendous pressures that can push adjoining shells apart ever so slightly. By imparted a multi-millisecond delay, the middle (or outer, depending on which is to fire first) shell can travel unimpeded. The second major improvement was a slight reduction in charge power resulting in a reduction in muzzle velocity from 890m/s to 870m/s (still considerable!), this move reduced dispersion, reduced horizontal armor penetration, increased trajectory, and increased vertical armor penetration proportionally. These changes combined with increased practice (like piano, practice makes perfect :big_grin: ) resulted in a very satisfactory gun. Indeed, the Italian 381mm system was not the worst offender in the dispersion struggle: both the French 15 inch and British 14 inch programs faced greater challenges on the road to 'perfection'. Of Italian weapons, the 381mm was more accurate and had less dispersion than the 'new' 320mm mounted on the four legacy battleships.

The standard shell (referred to in the Regia Marina as 'ball') was an armor piercing shell of 885kg or 1951.09 pounds. Propellant charge was 264kg of NAC and FC4 (I have no idea what composition either of those are, please enlighten me if you know.). Range at maximum elevation is 42,800 meters (26.59 miles). Effective range was, of course, significantly lower. The high muzzle velocity's primary payoff was at close ranges where flat firing arcs against vertical armor would lead to penetration values similar to larger 16 inch rifles due to shallower angle of impact and reduced reliance on normalization.

There was also a lighter semi-armor piercing shell at 824kg.

Average fighting range was thought to be 18,500 meters. This corresponds to around 9 degrees of gun elevation. Shell travel time at this range is 26.35 seconds. At this rage, the 381mm shell could penetrate in excess of 416mm (the figure for 19,000 meters range) of steel at 90 degrees.

2) The 152/55 guns were mounted in the same triple turrets seen in the Abruzzi class of light cruiser. These were powerful weapons with long barrels, reflecting the Italian philosophy favoring high striking velocities. Rate of fire was acceptable but inferior to newer 6 inch designs like the US 6 inch/47. Reload times averaged 14 seconds.

Range was 25,700 meters with a shell weight of 49.6kg and a muzzle velocity of 925m/s.

3) The 90mm guns were revolutionary. Although not as much as was intended. These were the among the first fully stabilized dual purpose mounts installed on warships. Performance of the guns themselves was apparently spectacular, however the new and advanced oscillating motor system was complex with many points of failure. In combat, rate of fire was one round every five second. An interesting feature of the mounting was that it was welded to the deck without penetrating it thus preserving the integrity of the armored deck.

4) The 37mm guns were air cooled guns with and effective rate of fire of 140 rounds per minute because of hand loading. They had a six round loading tray. These mounts had a simple stabilization device to offset a limited amount of heel in the base of the mounting (not on the singles).

5) The 20mm had an effective rate of fire of 150 rpm. Barrels were mounted diagonally offset in twin mounts, a visually engaging approach.

6) The 120mm guns were reclaimed from older armored cruisers (which specific ships possessed Roma's four originally I do not know. They exclusively to be used for illumination purposes. Nominally they could light targets up to 10km away but in practice it seems that 5km was the effect range. These guns were deemed to be ineffective in their task and slated for replacement. However the exigencies of war precluded solutions. The were installed on the Roma anyway.

I. Overview & Background

We are at the end of the road. It has been a fun journey, starting in early July, until late September when the model was finished. And now we must conclude our storytelling of this build here. There will be other to come for certain, but my Roma has sailed.

I thought I would add a few words on the subject of the Roma and the Littorio class in general. This class of ships as been neglected in English language materials and suffers from, in my view, a somewhat poor reputation. This is most certainly undeserved. Until recently, there have been only a handful of very thin publications on the Littorio class. Many dedicated works suffer from inaccurate information, improper historiography, and sometimes pure projection. Fortunately, there is now a superlative monograph published by Naval Institute Press: The Littorio Class, Italy's Last and Largest Battleships 1937-1948 by ERminio Bagnasco and Augusto De Toro. I highly encourage anyone with an interest in these ships to get hold of a copy. It is worth every penny.

These ships represent a high point in the naval tradition of Italy and Europe in general. Elegant, graceful, and immensely powerful they are representative of a bygone era when large guns, thick plate steel, and powerful steam turbines together acted as the keystone predator of the seas.

The Littorios were the third largest type of battleship completed in Europe behind the Bismarcks and the sole Vanguard.

The Roma was a delight to build and I am happy to have as my new flagship. She was also relatively inexpensive for a modern 1:350 kit; I scored the kit on a sale and the only aftermarket used was Trumpeter's own upgrade set. I think I am into the build for less than $120 including my base, paint used, and other supplies.

First some history.

The Littorio class was born as the result of a pair of treaties. First the Washington and second the London. The first treaty set a proportion for tonnage allocation between the five victorious naval powers of the Great War. The United States, the United Kingdom, the Empire of Japan, the French Republic, and the Kingdom of Italy were allocated a ratio at 5:5:3:1.75:1.75 respectively. This translated into practical terms as 15 BBs displacing 525,000 tons standard each for the U.S. and the U.K., nine BBs at 305,000 tons for Japan, and five (initially) BBs at 175,000 tons each for France and Italy. There were also restrictions on other combatants (including aircraft carriers) outside of scope. Obviously there was some wiggle room in this treaty at least intially, and France and Italy were allowed some grace as neither navy was in any good position with regards to heavy units. France was permitted to retain two pre-dreadnoughts for a time to keep strength up.

The Regia Marina (RM), Italian for Royal Navy, built six dreadnought battleships in the years leading up to the Great War. This included the first in the world to enter service with three-gun turrets: the 12x12inch armed Dante Alighieri. There were also three Cavours and two Dorias. The Leonardo da Vinci detonated in port in 1916 and was a total loss.

So by the time of the Washington treaty Italy has its five battleships. These ships were acceptable, advanced designs in 1914, but were very poor companions to the American standards, the British 15 inch armed ships, or any of the Japanese capital ships.

Fortunately for the time being, the chief concern of Italian naval planners was the Marine Nationale of France. A navy that suffered greatly along with its host nation in the war. Since Entente Cordiale, the primary strength of France's fleet was concentrated on the Mediterranean. Its battlefleet was neglected as French naval resources were poured into more immediately useful destroyers, cruisers, avisos, and submarines. France had seven battleships (one was wrecked in 1922, the France). All of these Italian and French designs were smaller and lighter than their foreign counterparts. None came near the new 35,000 ton limitation on standard displacement.

All navies were permitted to upgrade their existing designs to modern standards and Italy chose to upgrade, at great expense and energy, its four remaining Cavour and Duilio ships in two periods producing essentially new ships. These upgrades were as far reaching as any of the more radical post-Pearl Harbor rebuilds done in the '40s. At a cost equal to new ships of greater power, the newly rebuilt battleships were effective within their limitations but could not compare with practically any foreign designs.
