Re: 1/700 Victorieuse

Its been a busy month but not at the workbench. I did manage to get myself in trouble though.
When I had place the masts and started measuring out the rigging I found out that the foremast ratlines, the anchors and the forward secondary guns would interfere with each other. After looking through my pictures I found that the guns were some 5mm too far forward and that the anchors would fit into a large cutout rather than be secured to the bulwarks. Lots of cutting and rebuilding gave me this.

While I was staring at pictures I also found that Victorieuse had a smaller bridge when she was just commissioned.

And I decided to rebuild the main guns again to an open, not shielded, configuration.

And that is where I am now. The photo etch is now at the paint shop getting primed and made a picture with her half sister Bayard which will be in a late configuration with cut down masts if I ever finish her.

Over the past week I have mainly been playing with water.
I cut out some watercolor paper and glued it to the base.
watercolourpaper.JPG
Unlike some others here on this board I chose to not seal the watercolor paper with glue at first but I put basic (department store) blue acrylic paint on it in two layers. The paper would start deforming and forming blisters as a result and by selectively glueing some of the paper back to the base I could get the wave pattern I want to see here. Once everything was thoroughly dry (48hrs) I added a top layer of acrylic gel and screwed Victorieuse on its base.

Next step: boats and fittings.

The lower connections of each level are in the kit, I just drilled them out and made them stronger. The upper ones are simply 1mm evergreen strip.

How do you made the connections between the different parts of the masts? Are these small plastic parts?

A few things have happened over the past week. I have started to build up the masts. Even tough I am trying to use as much parts as possible from the original kit making masts out of the plastic rod included in the kit is a very bad idea as the masts will have to take rigging. So I have built them up in different thicknesses of stainless steel rod and built out and strengthened the platforms in brass rod.

And as I will be mounting her on a base shortly I have put the first layers of white paint to the hull. The masts in the picture are still not glued on and will remain so until the hull is screwed down.

Interesting details - good to see them to support the few photos of the real ships.

Hi Abdur, nice to see you around and I hope you can live with my efforts at resin surgery.
A few things have happened.
I have made the 134mm secondary guns out of some massively over scale 3"guns from the spare box.

The bridges and guns have been railed and are ready for their first coat of paint.

And as you can see here I will start working on the masts and bowsprit from the very basic sketch that I managed to find while the bridges are going through the paint and repaint process.
Once the masts are ready I can choose a base and actually start painting the hull. White paint does not take handling very well so i have postponed that until Victorieuse is almost on its base.

@ Abdur: do you plan another of the French ship of the Sino-French War? E.g. the Alma class?

Not much progress to report as the sun came out this weekend . Haven't seen that here for a while.
Anyway, the main guns have now gained their working platforms in .3mm styrene.
mainguns1.JPG
maingun3.JPG
And I took the opportunity to compare these BL guns with the much more complicated muzzle loaders from the other side of the channel.

Meanwhile the first paint is on the deck. Still needs a lot of work.

Hi Maurice, thanks for the comment. If you have any more information about the design and construction of the ships, especially the rigging, that would be most welcome. So far I'm stuck with the very basic sketch on http://dossiersmarine.org/c-c.htm

Pieter

You are correct. The original design for the three corvettes cuirasses of the La Galissonnire class was by Camille Audenet but the design for the two final ships of the class, Victorieuse and Triomphante, was modified by Sabatier during their extended construction period, so they should be considered only half sisters to La Galissonnire.

Hi maxim,
I did find some pictures of the stern, not of the highest quality though. pm me if you're interested. One thing is really clear, La Gallisoniere can not be built from this kit.

Interesting!

I want to built that kit too. Do you found photos of the stern?
