I'm working on this kit right now, and what you've heard is correct-the freeboard is too low. I used a 1 mm-thick styrene sheet and to my eye it looks much closer to correct (I looked at 1.5 mm and it would've been a little too much). Not sure if this applies to all the kits or if I was just lucky, but both of my hulls also needed some puttying on the bows to fill molding issues, and the bow itself was a little too raked. I went with aftermarket 5"/38 mounts as well. Other than these issues, pretty nice kits.

I've been meaning to buy a couple of these for months now, but procrastinated. I'm going to have to buy one now. I read on another review that the model sits too low at the waterline, and needs a further 1 - 1 1/2 mm thick plate to raise it up - not a biggie, and surely do-able by most modelers.
