British submarines flew the Jolly Roger because they were labelled as pirates by the old guard who commanded battleships. I am not sure I would have disagreed in those days, but, in the same way that I do not care much for spies, I suppose the subs had to be.

Interesting story. I had heard of submarines flying The Jolly Roger before but not a surface ship.
