Great question. I don't know. I'll have a look at the Ishibashi book to see if there's anything there.

Those Square-Circle positions on the deck on both sides aft of the 4th turret, am I right that they were the supports for the Hydraulic elevators for the ships aircrafts prior to the stern catapult instalments? The same that was used on the Fuso class for Turret 3 catapult?

Could not find photo of a close-up (I think there are in a Japanese book which I don't have at the moment) so here is a model:

I attempted to answer yesterday but was defeated by our site's recalcitrance.

Though Sasebo-based, her two yard visits to Kure in 1941 make the Kure shade most likely.

A few month's ago, I was musing over the possibility of building the all gun version from the 1/350 kit. All the basics are there: planked deck, #6 barbette, crane bulge. It's definitely feasible with some scratch-building.

Way down on my priority list, though. :-)

Where was Hyuga home-ported during 1941? Sasebo or Kure? Paint question.

I've looked at the TROM over on Combined Fleet, she seemed to switch between the two over her career, it mentions

October 1934 Modernisation at Kure
1937 - departing Sasebo for China a lot
1938-9 - many travels
February 1941 departing from Sasebo again
March 1941 - Kure, then travels
July 1941 - Yokohama, then travels
August 1941 - Fleet base at Hashirajima, then Kure for repairs.
18 September, 26 October 1941 - dry docked at Kure

What paint did she likely have in 1941? A mix of Sasebo and Kure greys depending on the month?

Thank you all for the help above!

Keeping updated Dan, I've got around to this project now, doing the 1/700 Fujimi Hyuga as a 'study model' before putting the big hull together. It's now in primer. I like to see the ship in 3d first...

Both are excellent examples. The Ishibashi illustration is authoritative.

On page 17 I mentioned using spare Fuso and Kongo turrets to kit bash a 1/350 all-gun Hyuga - having just ordered the kit at last, I note that the kit seems to include the 4 Ise turrets, as well as a separate 2 new mould turrets for Hyuga... so it seems 6 turrets are included in the kit anyway. With the flat rear deck, it seems scratching the rear superstructure and turret mounts, and custom cutting some wood deck, might get one close to an all-gun version.

Hobby Link Japan (they were a sponsor, don't know their current status) lists a hybrid 1/350 Hyuga for sale: https://www.hlj.com/1-350-scale-ijn-car ... d-fuj60054

Did Fujimi ever release a 1/350 Hyuga in the hybrid configuration?
I know there was a 1/350 combo set of Ise and Hyuga a while ago. Supposedly it included the unique parts for the Hyuga, but I don't recall a separate kit being released.
Also, how extensive the differences between the two (after the conversion)? I am aware of the main mast difference...

Update.
Found the separate Hyuga kit. Should have looked better before posting...

TIA.

Thanks much! This is exactly what I needed in order to make a sound decision! I had been surprised to find that almost every website I had visited, whether it was a kit review, or a hobby supplier, did not offer the kit number somewhere in their text - or that there was so much information provided that it just muddied the waters for me. Now I feel confident that I will get the kits I want.

Fujimi's your best option for this. Their newest ISE kits without extras are as follows:
Item code 432472: guns-only version, 1942 with Type 21 radar and full hull: https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10602085
Item code 432151: guns-only version, same as above but waterline only: https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10521674
Item code 421858: flight deck version, with full hull: https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10330160
Item code 470078: flight deck version, waterline, EASY (molded in colour): https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10321136
Item Code 421520: flight deck version, waterline: https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10127291

For HYUGA: all are flight deck versions only
Item code 421964: full hull: https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10363190
Item code 431307: waterline: https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10326387

Ise and Hyuga Kit Info?

by rfwood1 » Tue Sep 15, 2020 12:17 am

I want to buy 2 kits - one without the carrier deck (1941) and one with it (1944), but I'm having real issues trying to determine which kits are the ones to buy. The product numbers I see online and the many variations released over the years are becoming a big blur and suppliers are asking ME for ordering details of the exact kits I want. I'd love to give them the info they want, but it's proving to be far more difficult than I had thought to do so. I don't want the "super-detailed" kits with wood decks, or glue-on stickers, but I do NOT want those crappy old kits from the 1970's. Any advice?
