The actual Shinano was built, and sunk. She was to be used mainly as an aircraft ferry and machine shop, rather than a carrier. Sunk on her trip to Kure.

The Japanese are reported to have built ONE set of 20.1" guns. They were tested ONCE and the breech failed.

Thus the Shinano was to have 18.1" guns. One of which was returned to the US for testing.

Heh, know the Shinano?

Wonder why the lower part, mainly the hull looks alot like a Yamato?

Exactly what it is. Follow-on to the Yamato, with 6 20" guns in three dual turrets and different main AA housings. Fujimi just released a kit of it in 1/700 scale. Look in the Yamato fans thread for the link =P

I was just in a room with a Super Yamato and I wanted to know what it was in reality? Obviously it was never built but would it just have been the Yamato with large modifications or were plans drawn up for a whole new ship?
