Brazil commissions helicopter carrier
Victor Barreira, Rio de Janeiro - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
29 June 2018
The Brazilian Navy commissioned the multi-purpose helicopter carrier PHM Atlantico (A140) on 29 June in the United Kingdom.

The ship, formerly the UK Royal Navy's HMS Ocean (L12), was purchased by the Brazilian Navy through a BRL381.081 million (USD98.76 million) deal on 19 February.

HMS Ocean was commissioned in September 1998 and decommissioned on 27 March at HM Naval Base Devonport in Plymouth. In the Royal Navy the ship will be replaced by the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales (R 09).

The helicopter carrier package for Brazil includes an Artisan 3D search radar, KH1007 surface surveillance radar system, four 30 mm DS30M Mk 2 remote weapon systems and four Mk 5B landing craft.

Ex HMS Ocean receives Brazilian pennant number

Former Royal Navy helicopter carrier HMS Ocean has received a new pennant number as the ship prepares to start a journey to her new home in Brazil.

The new pennant number was painted onto the ship’s hull last weekend at Her Majesty’s Naval Base Devonport where it is being prepared for delivery to the Brazilian Navy.

Once in Brazilian Navy service, the ship will be known as PHM Atlântico (A 140).

Brazil bought the retired HMS Ocean earlier this year for a reported price of £84 million.

HMS Ocean was officially decommissioned from Royal Navy service in a ceremony attended by Queen Elizabeth, who is the ship’s lady sponsor, on March 27.

Brazil has bought the Royal Navy’s flagship HMS Ocean for £84 million, it has been reported.

The UK Defence Journal claims it has received confirmation from a source in the Brazilian Defence community that the sale of the Devonport-based helicopter carrier has been agreed.

Its website reports that Brazilian journalist Roberto Lopes told the journal that the purchase has been confirmed by Brazilian Defence Minister Raul Jungmann within the last week.

Brazil officially confirm intention to purchase HMS Ocean

We broke the news in March that Brazil was interested in helicopter carrier HMS Ocean, this has now been confirmed by the Brazilian government.

Then in April, we reported that the Brazilian Navy had reportedly sent a proposal to pay for helicopter carrier HMS Ocean in instalments.

HMS Ocean is the UK’s only helicopter carrier and the fleet flagship of the Royal Navy. She is designed to support amphibious landing operations and to support the staff of Commander UK Amphibious Force and Commander UK Landing Force.

After all, it's been a little over a hundred years since Turkey bought a ship from the Brits that was originally going to Brazil, and that all worked out very well. :woo_hoo:

Turkey emerges as potential buyer of UK helicopter carrier HMS Ocean

The Turkish government is interested in buying the soon-to-be-decommissioned UK helicopter carrier HMS Ocean if it is not sold to Brazil.

In a reply to a parliamentary question, the UK defense ministry confirmed that Turkey sent an expression of interest to UK about the potential sale of HMS Ocean.

HMS Ocean is currently on her final deployment as a commissioned Royal Navy ship, serving the role of NATO Standing Maritime Group 2 flagship in the Mediterranean.

The purchase of HMS Ocean by the Brazilian Navy still has a few hurdles to overcome but they’ve already picked out a name.

We understand from Roberto Lopes via e-mail, the source who let us know that Brazil has already submitted a payment plan for the vessel, that the officers involved in the ship acquisition process are optimistic and are already discussing details beyond the technical and financial assessments that have been made, such as the name of the ship.

NOTE: This is an updated, re-titled thread. Please scroll down for the latest updates.

I don't think Brazil won't be interested in an LPH considering they just decided to scrap their last carrier Sao Paulo (ex-French carrier Foch).

HMS Ocean reportedly offered for sale to Brazil

According to local media in Brazil, the Ministry of Defence have offered HMS Ocean for sale to the South American country.

The article, found here, claims that Brazilian officials believe that the price seemed “reasonable” and the Brazilian Navy are examining the prospect “with cautious optimism”.

HMS Ocean is the UK’s only helicopter carrier and the fleet flagship of the Royal Navy. She is designed to support amphibious landing operations and to support the staff of Commander UK Amphibious Force and Commander UK Landing Force.

According to someone we spoke to currently on-board the vessel, there are rumours that this is one of a number of possibilities:
