I used plastic (evergreen) rod - 0,5mm
I roll it under the knife with gently pressing down the knife. Very gently ! If you use to much power - knife cuts down.
I rolled 3-4 times up&down until I reach visual effect of 2-3 or 4 turned concavities. Then I pressed more to cut down.

after deformation (I used metal bars with different diameters to press them on rubber gum) looked quite OK:

polyester is very fragile - to much power when rolling or shaping causing breaks

to be honest I spoiled 4cm of plastic bar initially to get first item looking quite OK. :big_grin:

How do you get those nice fine cuts in the plastic rod? What is exactly your technique if I might ask?

It's been called mantelets.
Here's my approach of that:

hi all


i've been getting back into model making after a 25 year break :)
built a bunch of planes , now getting into ships.

i have a bunch of IJN ships on my bench (working up a skillset to build the tamiya waterline 1/700 yamato)

and often on pictures the ijn protects their superstructures from (i assume schrapnell) by adding rolled up fabric (like in this picture of the akagi http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/88/Japanese_aircraft_carrier_Akagi_Deck.jpg )

i have 2 questions ... does anyone know what these are called??
and does anyone know of a technique to make these in 1/700 ??
