BTW, Russian sources following up Putin's announcement of program for construction of 6 carriers (still highly unlikely to be completed in its entirety) said the new carriers would be nuclear powered, displaces around 50,000 tons, and carry around 30 - 40 fixed wing aircraft. In another words, something very much like the Charles De Gaulle. The construction is said to start in 2010. Also interestingly recently published Russian naval articles does not include new carriers amongst planned Russian naval strength out to 2030.

This news item dates to the beginning of the year. Since that time I recall some news update to the effect that the issue has been ironed out and Goshekov is to be delivered to India in 2009.

In the mean time, a somewhat related news items popped up. Russian sources say that China has bought from the group that outfitted Kuznetov 4 sets of complete carrier landing equipment. 1 would be for land based trial and training, 1 for trial installation on board the Varyag, the last 2 for 2 new build domestic Chinese carriers of 60,000 - 70,000 tons that would be publicly announced in 2009 and be in service by 2015 - 2017.

(as an aside, I have found GLOBALSECURITY.ORG to be much more useful if you define a few of their advertisers in the local hosts file. On a PC this is in /system32/drivers/etc...).

It looks like completion of the refit for the ex-Admiral Gorshkov could be delayed by several years due to funding problems.
